PMA Predicts 17 Million Pico Projectors by 2012
Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on front projectors, has just released findings from their Pico Projector (also commonly referred to as pocket projectors) Baseline Survey, in which the manufacturers as a group predicted explosive growth in the worldwide market for tiny, battery-powered projectors, from more than 2½ million units in 2010 to more than 17 million units in 2012. And, if Bill says this is where we will be in 2012, I believe him! He’s been doing this longer than anyone else alive!
“Pico projectors came of age during the fourth quarter of 2008, with demand far outstripping supply,” says Dr. William Coggshall, founder and president of PMA. “While it is too early to know for sure, our survey provides the first real consensus of manufacturers of pico projectors, optical engines, and components. Among myriad other detailed findings, these manufacturers expect that by 2012 showing video would be the leading application by far, followed by showing photos and gaming.”
While 61 percent of the units sold during 2010 are expected to have VGA (640 x 480 pixels) or lower resolution, by 2012 the pixel counts will have shifted upwards considerably. At that time, the most popular single resolution is expected to be Wide VGA (854 x 480 pixels), but fully 58 percent will be SVGA (800 x 600) or higher resolutions. Although most participants, as well as outside observers, believe that the vast majority of pico projectors will be used by consumers, the manufacturer group believed that a considerable portion would be used by professionals, which helps explain the rapid trend toward higher resolutions. In addition, the higher image quality produced by higher resolution should be an important competitive factor.
