I make no bones of the fact that, despite being a tech guy, I’m not an early adopter, and I can be kind of curmudgeonly.

I’ve refused to support Bluray since the beginning, since hardcopy media is so 20th century. Downloads and streaming aren’t the future, they’re the now. Even early on, Bluray seemed to me to be an unnecessary pit stop on the entertainment superhighway.

In truth, the only Bluray discs that have infiltrated into my household have snuck in when bundled as part of a DVD+Bluray+digital copy value package. They remain in their dustjackets, unplayed.

Yes, I still buy DVDs, but that’s only because I have kids, and I buy far fewer DVDs now than I did in years past.

And generally, if I’m going to buy a DVD at all, I’d rather buy it packaged with a digital copy, so that it goes into my iTunes collection, and my kids can access it from their iPads.

Being kids, they seem to prefer to watch content on their iPads than on the enormous flat-panel installed in the basement rec room.

So I was somewhat nonplussed when my wife brought home The LEGO Movie from Costco.

I love The LEGO Movie, that’s not the problem.

The problem was that it incorporates Ultraviolet.

My feelings on Ultraviolet are public record, and they haven’t changed.

The days where the mark of a great AV system includes a huge number of sources are past. Simplicity is everything these days.

I’m annoyed that in order for my kids to watch The LEGO Movie on their iPads I had to register an Ultraviolet account, download the Flixster app, and explain to them why they need an app that isn’t iTunes or Netflix to watch it.

At the moment I don’t have a device in my media room system to access Ultraviolet, and being a curmudgeon I will hold out as long as possible before I do.

The best solution is always the most simple and direct.

If my wife hadn’t already opened the shrink wrap on the DVD I would have returned it to Costco and bought the LEGO Movie on iTunes.
