February 25, 2019 | Volume: 5 | Issue: 4

We have a big issue for you today — our founder, Gary Kayye, has published his AV technology predictions for 2019, called Kayye’s Krystal Ball. Every year, he not only writes these predictions for the coming year, but he also goes back and reviews his predictions from last year. Check out his article below to see what he got right and what he got wrong.

Joan Vandermate also goes over different options to replace the “dreaded videoconferencing remote” for meeting spaces, from apps to tablets. We have a lot more news out of the ISE show in Amsterdam earlier this month, particuarly in the AV-over-IP space. Enjoy the issue!

COLUMNS

+ Welcome to Gary Kayye’s 2019 Krystal Ball – What Will Happen in AV in 2019 [Gary Kayye]

I love writing this annual predictions article. If you’re a regular reader, you already know this but for those that don’t, my Kayye’s Krystal Ball piece is an annual article where I not only tell you what I think is going to happen in the AV market for the upcoming year, but I also go back and review the previous year’s predictions. Sort of a scorecard of accuracy, if you will. And, 2019 is going to be an exciting year with A LOT of changes in the AV market so I hope you’ll read them all.

+ Can We Finally Throw Away the Dreaded Videoconferencing Remote? [Joan Vandermate]

Videoconferencing technologies have improved tremendously over the past several years. Cloud services have made it possible to cost-effectively scale deployments to thousands of desktops and conference rooms. Improvements in video encoding, compute power and broadband services mean anyone can join a video call, from almost anywhere, via practically any device. And USB conference cams and audio systems allow IT departments to install high-quality room systems in a multitude of spaces unthinkable a few years ago. But one element of the video conferencing experience has stubbornly remained almost unchanged since the 1980s: the remote control.

+ Samsung at ISE 2019: The Wall, Artificial Intelligence-Based Scaling and Digital Signage [Sara Abrons]

While at ISE 2019 in Amsterdam, I had the opportunity to talk to Hyesung Ha, senior vice president of visual display business at Samsung Electronics, to talk about some of the new products the company had introduced recently and were showing on their stand.
