Latest headlines: Mark Coxon wonders if the AV industry has soft skills, Scott Tiner on the difference between integrators and value-added resellers, plus news from Visix, 22Miles, STRATACACHE and more

November 29, 2018 | Volume: 10 | Issue: 11.2

A recent study looked into why people go into public spaces — and many of those reasons had nothing to do with actually buying something. It will take a special skillset for technologists to recognize trends such as this one and use that information to shape how technology can meet the needs of customers. Today, Mark Coxon talks about those skills and whether the AV industry has them.

Scott Tiner also talks about his experiences in higher education in working with both AV integrators and IT integrators and how they are different.

Enjoy the issue!

COLUMNS

+ Is the AV Industry Getting Soft? [Mark Coxon]

Does the AV industry have the soft skills needed to be able to recognize non-technology trends and data that show how customers want to use technology?

+ Integrators or VARs? [Scott Tiner]

Let’s look at an example of how VARs can add value to computer deployment at my college. They will put asset tags on computers, image the computers and provide us with a spreadsheet of all pertinent information for each computer (serial number, MAC, etc.). The computers get delivered to us ready to deploy. Our staff only has to import that spreadsheet into our systems and put the computer on a staff member's desk. This saves us hours of time and allows us to focus on other projects. That is an added value.
