LG’s Cinematic Sound OLED Display Now Listed As Korean Standard

LG Display announced on Dec. 14 that its cinematic sound OLED (CSO) display has been listed as a Korean standard (KS).

A CSO display generates sound without a separate speaker; it acts as a vibrating panel. LG Display first unveiled it at CES 2017, the world’s largest consumer electronics and IT exhibition. The technology has since been successfully commercialized and is applied to OLED TVs.

The process of listing CSOs as a national standard was an involved process. As current standards were made based on regular speakers, there were limitations in objectively evaluating and measuring CSOs. In response, LG Display established an organization in 2018 and promoted standardization by studying evaluation methods that can objectively quantify CSOs’ differentiated strengths.

Meanwhile, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards has decided to select CSOs as an item for an international standard development task for promising new industries and list CSOs as an international standard at the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC).
