Joel’s Magic 8 Ball: 2017 Predictions for the Rental and Staging Industry
By Joel Rollins rAVe Columnist
Last month, I confessed to all of you that I really enjoy the holiday season. It seems that as the season approaches, all you remember about it are the good things. However, over the last couple of weeks, I have been reminded of a few of the negative sides of the holidays. For instance, today I came to the office early in order to get information on estimates for clients who are demanding them for the end of the year. As I emailed them out, from two-thirds of them I got automatic replies that they will be back sometime after the first of the year.
Nevertheless, we here at rAVe don’t take the week off, so I thought that I would indulge a holiday week tradition. No, not having too much eggnog, although that is probably in order some time later on this week. Instead I mean to indulge in the time-honored tradition of making predictions for the coming year.
This tradition is an old and proud one, created and prolonged by our leader, Gary Kayye, with his widely publicized “Krystal Ball.” Personally, I’ve always wondered how a leader in a technical field can get away with using something as low-tech as a mere crystal ball. I use “Magic 8-Ball” on my vintage Apple Newton, which is plenty archaic enough for me.
The other thing that I always find about end-of-year predictions is that they are just too easy. As a kid I well remember Jeane Dixon, the famous psychic and her annual predictions. It always seemed that all you really had to do was to predict the death of several famous people who were particularly old, infirm or reckless, or the divorce of a famous Hollywood Playboy or Playgirl and you were psychic. However, in these cases the odds were with you, so it wasn’t much of a feat.
So I have decided to make my predictions for this year, especially for the rental and staging portion of the industry, on two levels:
First, let me make the spectacularly easy (Jeane Dixon-style) predictions for our industry:
- New technologies for signal propagation will continue to multiply. The issues with the HDMI interface as it currently stands are many (especially when it comes to the public performance part of the industry). 4K resolution and interactive video standards have already caused us to work beyond this common interface, often through a move to SDI. Over the next year or two, we will see a number of formats that will stretch these limits even further, especially as they are used with immersive technologies.
- New display technologies that have recently come to market will begin to show their potential for transforming the rental and staging area of our industry. Specifically, I have tracked OLED from its inception in small size displays such as VR headsets and camera viewfinders to its current state where its size, brightness, and flexibility are beginning to show advantages over existing LED technologies. My painfully obvious prediction is that this technology will very soon begin to change public performances as it becomes available at lower cost and in larger sizes.
Now, let me step out a little and make a couple of technological predictions that are (at least slightly) less obvious.
- Collaboration will be a continuing, driving change force in the rental market. More and more, as collaboration software and hardware becomes more prevalent within client organizations, we will need to accommodate it as part of public meetings. Large touchscreens, polling computers (especially those that utilize a clients smart phone as polling input) and systems which utilize social media and collaboration workspaces will continue to grow in the rental market. In fact, make sure that your staff is familiar with these types of collaboration environments, especially the cloud-based environments, because this could be a new offering to your existing clients.
- The market will see increased requests for visualization and immersive hardware and software systems. The growing acceptance of immersive individual visualization technologies will have companies experimenting with virtual environments and data visualization. I predict it will begin to see (especially in smaller, collaborative meetings) requests for immersive hardware like 3D displays (yes, there is a use for 3D) VR and immersive headsets, and 3D input systems. This may be a little farther out, but it’s acceptance in the mainstream market (and thus, in the rental market for those companies who choose to be there) is only a matter of time.
So, there are my thoughts on the upcoming year. We will see what Gary has to predict this year, and I am going to pay close attention to the technology predictions without listening to anything about Keith Richards. No fair cheating.
See you in the new year. Leave a Comment

BREAKFAST Offers Old-School Flip-Disc Display SystemFor companies looking for an inexpensive alternative to covering a wall in LED screens, the so-called Flip-Disc Display System from BREAKFAST is an interesting product. The Flip-Disc Display System is a kinetic screen that’s been built to be fast and easy, not requiring a team of engineers and developers to get up and running. Basically discs flip (back and forth) to form an image using colored discs (in a variety of off-the-shelf colors and finishes). The casing are available in satin-black or white. In fact, it’s sort of like a GIANT version of a DMD (digital mirror device) from Texas Instruments’ DLP technology in that the discs actually flip (as individual pixels) close to 30 times a second.
This video helps explain what we’re talking about.
The BREAKFAST software is capable of displaying video files along with static images and text (and text can be interacted with via the included 3D depth camera). It includes a built-in scheduler that allows programing of content by time of day or via sequence and developers can use the API to push any custom content directly to the screen.
The mounting bar provides a flexible way to hang the panels. It can be flush mounted to a wall, hung from cables or a wall stud, attached to scaffolding, and many others. The support bar also features threaded holes on the front face, allowing for a custom facade to be placed overtop. And butterfly brackets are also available for attaching to a support structure from behind.

Barco Launches Seven New Laser Projectors Aimed at the Theater MarketBarco announced the growth of its laser-illuminated cinema projector portfolio with two high-contrast flagship laser projectors for cinema screens and five new laser phosphor projectors for small to large screens. Following its flagship DP4K-L laser projectors and 2K CLP series of laser phosphor projectors, Barco is now bringing laser benefits to all cinema screens with the introduction of the 2K SLP series for small to mid-size screens and the 2K/4K BLP range for mid-size to large screens. The 6P RGB high-contrast range doubles the contrast of Barco’s current flagship laser projectors and provides exhibitors with an even broader choice in the Premium Large Format (PLF) segment. The BLP laser phosphor projectors will be shipping by the end of 2016, the SLP laser phosphor and LHC high-contrast projectors will be available first half of 2017.
Barco is introducing two high-contrast versions of its flagship laser projector series that offer twice the contrast — up to 6,000:1 – of its current flagship laser projectors. With the DP4K-20LHC and DP4K-40LHC, Barco offers exhibitors a wider range of options to captivate audiences with the ultimate visual experience. Reaching brightness levels of 36,000 lumens, the LHC series provide the same superior color saturation and uniformity as the other flagship laser projectors.
The introduction of the SLP series brings laser projection down to unprecedented price points. For less than 1 dollar per hour of operations, exhibitors can now enjoy laser image quality and ease of mind from a brand-new laser phosphor projector.
By introducing the DP4K-BLP projectors with native 4K and high-lumen light output, laser phosphor projection will now find its way to many large cinema screens across the globe. The SLP range brings laser phosphor quality to the smallest theaters at a very attractive price point. Varying in brightness levels — up to 24,500 lumens — and providing native 2K or 4K resolution, the laser phosphor projection portfolio combines Barco’s renowned DCI-compliant image quality with the outstanding uniformity and contrast that’s unique to laser illumination. The laser phosphor projectors show improved image quality on both white and silver screens and are fully compatible with popular 3D systems. Additionally, the projector’s light output remains constant over time.
Exhibitors who already own a B-series or S-series Barco cinema projector don’t need to invest in an entirely new model to benefit from laser technology. They can simply retrofit their current projector with a laser phosphor module. Based on a laser light source, the laser cinema projectors increase uptime and eliminate the costs, administration, and maintenance related to lamp-based illumination, for worry-free operation. The light output of the laser phosphor projectors can be dimmed to 30 percent of their initial brightness, enabling users to show both 2D and 3D content from one and the same projector.
Next to its new laser cinema projectors, Barco also introduces its brand-new Barco Alchemy Integrated Cinema Media Processor (ICMP) as an option. With this next-generation ICMP, exhibitors can leverage the full benefits of alternative content by directly hooking up their ‘UHD Premium’ sources to the projector. Two additional HDMI2.0 interfaces have been added to the ICMP, while keeping its legacy HDMI1.4 (and SDI) inputs. This gives users the option to hook up four different sources. Thanks to the capabilities of HDMI2.0, the 4K HFR and 4K 3D capabilities that the projector and server already had are now linked to a much wider portfolio of new alternative content sources.

Waves Audio Ships Their Primary Source Expander PluginWaves Audio is now shipping the Waves Primary Source Expander (PSE) plugin. PSE lets users reduce stage bleed and sensitivity to feedback when a mic is idle by automatically lowering mic levels between musical phrases — designed for live sound and for mixing live recordings.
PSE works like a fader that smoothly attenuates the channel’s level when the source goes below the threshold that’s been set. The user determines both the threshold and the amount of attenuation. Reducing stage noise leakage when microphones are idle will help users get an overall mix that is more coherent, more focused, and has better phase relations.
PSE also provides advanced sidechain and ducking controls for greater consistency and precision when treating complex live scenarios. Whether mixing FOH or monitors in a live venue or working on a live recording in the studio, PSE will ensure that mics are as loud and clean as they can be, while preserving the source’s original tone and the natural ambience of the location.
Waves Primary Source Expander plugin features:
- Reduces stage bleed and sensitivity to feedback when mics are idle
- Smoothly attenuates levels when source drops below the threshold defined
- User-friendly GUI for quick operation – set and forget
- Internal and external sidechain with HP/LP filters
- Ducking mode for added precision in complex live scenarios
- Release time presets

PK Sound Debuts Gravity 30, a 30″ SubwooferThe Gravity 30 by PK Sound is its largest subwoofer and the first product released in the Gravity family. The 30” Gravity 30 claims to set a new standard for low frequency reproduction with unprecedented output capability and exceptional transient accuracy. With a very high output-to-size ratio, PK Sound says the Gravity 30 replaces three conventional dual 18” subwoofers, significantly reducing truck pack and weight.
A 15,000-watt class-D amplifier with differential pressure loop technology provides efficient, high output power to the 30” moving magnet linear motor M-Force transducer. The dual reflex bandpass enclosure provides high, symmetric loading to the cone increasing efficiency, dramatically improving transient response, reducing distortion and maximizing low frequency extension. A precision-engineered steel alloy motor mount provides a rigid connecting assembly which acts as large heatsink for the transducer and as a grill for the high frequency chamber, additional cooling dramatically increases power handling and reduces power compression.
The Gravity 30 is cardioid arrayable, providing the maximum amount of flexibility when creating large subwoofer arrays especially when a high amount of directionality is required. The subwoofer is available in both touring and installation versions. Both models integrate seamlessly with PK’s Kontrol software providing access to key DSP features and real time monitoring. The touring (for live events) model incorporates an integrated rigging assembly, allowing up to 12 cabinets to be suspended, and features automatic array detection allowing quick and seamless set up of subwoofer arrays.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe Rental [and Staging] Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).
Don’t like us, then go away — unsubscribe! Just use the link below.
To send me feedback, don’t reply to this newsletter. Instead, write directly to me at gary@ravepubs.com or for editorial ideas, Editor-in-Chief Sara Abrons at sara@ravepubs.com
A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I’ve been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don’t think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue, which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe [Publications] has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.
Everything we publish is Opt-in — we spam NO ONE! rAVe ProAV Edition is our flagship ePublication with what we believe is a reach of virtually everyone in the ProAV market. rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA and launched in February 2004, is, by far, the largest ePub in the HomeAV market. We added rAVe Rental [and Staging] in November 2007, rAVe ED [Education] in May 2008 and then rAVe DS [Digital Signage] in January 2009. We added rAVe GHGav [Green, Healthcare & Government AV] in August 2010 and rAVe HOW [House of Worship] in July 2012.
