LED Bulbs: The Score So Far

Readers of rAVe Pubs may have noticed, or indeed commented upon my obsession with lightbulbs.

Back in May I mentioned scoring a great deal on LED bulbs at Costco, and I’ve been experimenting with connected bulbs of all sorts.

I thought that energy conscious readers might be interesting to know where I’ve gotten to in my drive to replace the CFL and incandescent bulbs in my home.

As of the last count , there are 63 light sockets in my home (that includes floor and table lamps, not just installed fixtures), and now 29 of them have LED bulbs installed.

Total coverage: 41%

That’s actually a fairly substantial milestone because LED use is now concentrated in the highest occupancy rooms in the house: I’ve got 100% LED coverage in the kitchen/dining area, the office,  laundry room, and the gym.

I was especially pleased about getting 100% LED in the kitchen, since that’s where everyone spends the most time. It was a big help finding LED bulbs on Amazon that fit in the G4 Halogen sockets of the under-counter lighting.

Under-counter task lighting is great, but Halogen burns hot, and the waste heat probably doesn’t do my cupboards any favors, and while the bulb aren’t expensive they burn out all the time, so they become an ongoing expense.

Six LED G4 bulbs on Amazon, $26.99, so $4.49 apiece.

I find myself pleased by strangest things.

Most of the remaining bulbs in the house are CFL rather than incandescent, so that’s also progress away from old, inefficient bulb technology.

Progress marches on.
