4D Theater: Just Stop, Already
The history of cinema is littered with technological missteps best left forgotten.
I continue to think that 3D belongs on the trash heap of history, but that’s not what I’m here to rail against today.
In January we spent a week in California, visiting Disneyland, Sea World and the San Diego.
Overall, it was a fantastic trip. A good time was had by all.
Part and parcel of our admission to the San Diego Zoo were tickets to one of the two 4D movie attractions: either Rio or Ice Age.
So we attended the screening of Ice Age 4D: No Time for Nuts
You want a capsule review? Try this: “It was dumb, and I am not impressed.”
4D Theater seeks to enhance the movie watching experience with physical interaction: gusts of wind, vibrating seats, and surprise sprays of water in your face.
Even a bubble machine.
I can only hope that the big theater chains never aspire to scale this experience up to a full size commercial theater.
And honestly, for all you residential AV Pros out there if you ever have a client seek you out to install a 4D Cinema in their home no one will be more surprised than me.
