On Privacy, Convenience and Pirate Scanners
By Joel Rollins rAVe Columnist
Last week, I returned from InfoComm. It was the usual manic event, with the usual results. 39,000 people crowded the aisles to see products and services from over 400 suppliers. Many, many of us took the opportunity to rub elbows with our peers from around the world, increasing the sale of beer and soft drinks radically in the always overpriced Orlando restaurants.
One change, however, was welcome. For the first time I took home no printed literature. I have complained for years about the ridiculous tendency of trade shows to send you home with expensively printed color literature that sits in the corner of the office, still in its expensively printed tradeshow bag, which is never read. This year, instead, the QR code had definitely taken root everywhere, coupled with inexpensive scanning systems that use smart phones. In fact, unlike the days of the magstripe, codes could be scanned without your permission by some enterprising young booth person who would run up, scan you, and run on to the next person before you even had a chance to ask what company they were from. In fact, as I roamed the show interviewing exhibitors and attendees, (along with my intrepid assistant Leah McCann), I actually saw instances of people running around and scanning people in booths that were not their own. I began to refer to them as “pirate scanners.”
As an AV person who for many years has been heavily involved in the trade show market, this brings up (with some new emphasis) a subject that I have been thinking and writing about for many years. And that is the subject of the commercial invasion of privacy.
In the old days, we picked up literature. We placed it in our expensively printed throw away tradeshow literature bag (which was a huge expenditure for the company that provided them, as along with the bags they had to pay a premium fee to the trade show promoter for the privilege of passing them out). But this meant that we were selective about the literature that we picked up, as we would have to carry it all day. OK, maybe some of it was shoved into our bag by “pirate tradeshow literature distributors” as we were standing in an aisle talking. But most of it, we picked up voluntarily, which meant we may have actually read some of it.
Contrast this with today.
The convenience of a tradeshow badge with an optically scannable code is undeniable. But let me point out some of the negatives that we have felt over the last few years as these technologies took over from traditional methods of information distribution at trade shows.
It’s just too easy.
Realistically, I didn’t see anybody saying, “No, you may not scan my badge.” And yet, if you think about it, we now say yes to people whose literature we would have refused under the old circumstances. Is that bad? Depends on how much email you want to get, and how many webinars you want to be invited to.
It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
Unlike picking up literature at a “old style” tradeshow, these scans put you on a list, which is often hard to get taken off of. I tried with several vendors after last year, and the most common answer that I got was, “Oh that was a list from a tradeshow — I’m not even sure who is handling that.”
Author’s note: In this instance, I was very proud to be working with rAVe [Publications] at the show. rAVe has led our industry in the promotion of easy opt-in standards and policies, and their staff has always displayed great consciousness of how the lists that they gather are used. -JRR
Tradeshow Overshare
OK, I opted in when I allowed my badge to be scanned. But often, I expected that this transaction would be similar to an “old style” tradeshow transaction, where they would simply send me information about the product I expressed an interest in. But most of them don’t maintain good segregation of these lists, meaning you are sent copious numbers of emails about products that you were not interested in, from which you have to sort out the information you wanted.
Taking It Personally
But it’s not just the email — it’s the fact that the email contains tags and links that take you to the information, allowing you to acquire a cookie in the process that continues to personalize your web experience no matter where you go. In fact, no sooner did I sign up for InfoComm than I began to notice that no matter where I went on the web I was seeing banner ads about the show and its sponsors. They continue now even though the show is over. One of them is from a distributor that I use regularly, which won’t go away and takes up my screen real estate with a teaser ad about a product I have no interest in. Sure, I could dump their cookies and make it stop, but often those cookies are very difficult to identify, and simply clearing them all would stop the action for things that I opted into.
In fact, one of the things that these lists do is enable a lot of junk to get around my spam filter, because it has been personalized enough to look original and fool the filter.
Now, there are a lot of methods for dealing with electronic distribution of information and the information overload that it causes. the best that I know of are:
- Be careful about the amount of information that you give during your sign-up for a tradeshow. For all of the shows that I attend other than InfoComm (where I have enough of a general professional interest to be broadly subscribed), I usually create a separate email alias that I can later dump if I am getting too much input to my email in basket or my web browser.
- Subscribe to a good general news digest site (rAVe, of course, comes to mind) that bring you the important information all in one place, rather than subscribing to individual sites and manufacturers which would get you that information many many times.
- And, just as a tip, in addition to email aliases for specific shows, maintain separate professional and personal online identities. Your professional contacts are interested in you professionally, but you don’t necessarily want them to see the photos from the last bachelor or bachelorette party you attended.
For many years, I wondered about the future of the tradeshow, and how the electronic distribution of information would affect it. Many people expected the demise of the large commercial show due to the easy availability of this information. It is obvious the tradeshow planners have done well in planning how to implement information technology, and to survive the digital storm. I don’t see trade shows going away.
But the technologies we have talked about this month are only the beginning. I have been part of several experiments that will take this technology to the next level, in ways that many people don’t understand. Stay tuned for next month, when I will speak with a couple of real experts about how the latest in AV, scanning, and biometrics will affect the future of the tradeshow and of our professional communications. GLP Announces Full Production Release of X4 Bar RangeThe range features two fixtures, the X4 Bar 10 and X4 Bar 20, both of which are high performance battens offering flexibility to today’s lighting designer across multiple applications.
The GLP impression X4 Bar uses high output RGBW LED’s that are packed tightly to give a full batten of light, with 20 LEDs used in the 40 inch long (100 centimeters) X4 Bar 20 and 10 LEDs in the shorter 20 inch (50 centimeters) X4 Bar 10. High quality optics ensure a smooth, homogenized output across the batten through a broad pallet of pastel and saturated colors. This allows for subtle graduated fades, or for distinct color breaks between LEDs. This is complemented by GLP’s exceptional dimming, which ensures that there is no color shift, just smooth even fades.
DMX control offers full pixel mapping capabilities, allowing a whole multitude of dynamic fades and chases through intensities and colors. The X4 Bar 10 and X4 Bar 20 both feature a 7:1 zoom ranging from 7 to 50 degrees, giving effects from a narrow angle light curtain to a wide angle backlight or washlight.
The X4 Bar also features a motorized tilt, for fast refocusing or to be used to add more dynamics to the output beam and it has been specifically designed to give consistent pixel spacing between adjacent units, an important visual aspect for many designers when using fixtures in full view of the audience.
The X4 Bar is complemented by Powercon in and thru connectors for easy daisy chaining without the need for an external PSU, along with multiple DMX modes, rubber feet for floor mounting and ¼ turn attachments points for rigging flexibility.

VUE Audiotechnik Announces Dante Support For All DSP-Based ProductsVUE Audiotechnik will unveil new Dante support for its digital DSP-enabled systems at InfoComm. Planned for both the h-Class family of Ultra-High Definition Speaker Systems and V Series DSP/Amplifier Systems Engines, the update, set to officially ship in September, will be incorporated within all future products, and upgrades will be available for owners of existing systems.
VUE Audiotechnik has been including an Ethernet in both product lines to accommodate control, with the expectation that future expansion would include Dante audio networking. With the recent unveiling of the Dante Ultimo chip, a cost-effective but feature-rich Dante solution for low channel-count applications, all VUE DSP systems can now include the functionality at a competitive price point. Like every Dante product, the Ultimo allows the VUE h-class and V Series systems to operate in any Dante environment, with routing of audio streams for each individual Dante-enabled product.
Released earlier this year, the Dante Ultimo chip is the perfect solution for speaker products, which require only a single or pair of input streams. Providing the full Dante input capabilities, the Ultimo allows VUE to be a complete Dante network client, enabling the company’s products to go into environments where there is already Dante infrastructure in place, such as theme parks and stadiums.
The Dante upgraded h-Class, which includes the h-Class full range and subwoofer systems, will begin shipping in September at no additional cost. Upgrade solutions for existing h-Class systems will also be available at that time. The V Series V4 and V6 with on-board Dante capabilities will follow suit by the end of 2015 and here are the details. Leave a Comment

Christie Launches AutoStack Camera-Based Software at InfoCommChristie is launching its new Christie AutoStack and AutoStack Premium camera-based software at InfoComm 2015. The Christie AutoStack systems auto-calibrate, warp and blend Christie Twist enabled 3DLP projectors in under two minutes per projector — quicker than traditional methods, which can take hours. Unlike similar systems, Christie AutoStack and AutoStack Premium are integrated custom designed solutions that include software, camera and lens.
Christie AutoStack supports up to a 2-by-3 blended array of projectors that can be stacked for a total of 12 projectors. AutoStack Premium works on even larger screens, as long as the selected camera and lens combination ‘sees’ the entire projected area. They both support a variety of cameras and lens options, which are pre-calibrated as a pair to ensure maximum results.
Christie AutoStack is designed for flat screens, while Christie AutoStack Premium can be used with a wide variety of flat, curved/cylindrical and portrait display screens. Both AutoStack and AutoStack Premium are ideal for large classrooms, boardrooms, houses of worship, museums, government and entertainment where multiple projectors may need blending and warping.
Christie AutoStack and Christie AutoStack Premium work in conjunction with Christie Twist, and support all M Series, J Series, Boxer, D4K and Roadie 4K 3DLP projectors.
Christie AutoStack at a glance:
- Camera-based system auto-calibrates warps and blends images on flat surfaces in less than two minutes per projector, compared to hours with traditional methods.
- Up to a 2-high by 3-wide blended configuration can be stacked for a total of 12 projectors.
Intuitive user interface with step-by-step process and real time camera feedback.
- Overcomes off-angle/keystone issues for a perfectly framed image every time.
- Constant brightness overlaps between projectors in array.
- Delivers seamless displays in large-scale multi-projector setups.
Christie AutoStack Premium delivers all the features of AutoStack, plus it expands the capabilities by auto-calibrating and blending images on flat, curved/cylindrical (with a curvature of up to plus/minus 70 degrees) and portrait orientation surfaces in less than two minutes per projector. When a single camera sees all projectors being used in its field of view, it allows more than 12 projectors to be used in an array.

Bose Expands Portable P.A. Offerings with F1 Model 812 Flexible Array Loudspeaker and F1 Subwoofer Bose Professional has expanded its portable P.A. offerings with the introduction of the F1 Model 812 Flexible Array Loudspeaker and F1 Subwoofer. Designed to serve a broader set of applications than L1 systems, the F1 Model 812 lets users optimize sound by creating up to four different vertical coverage patterns.
With the F1 system, sound can be optimized for playing at floor level, on stage or facing raked seats or bleachers. To control the vertical coverage pattern, users simply push or pull the array into position to create “Straight” (tightest vertical control, for floor-level audience coverage), “J” (adjust vertical splay down, when P.A. is placed on stage), “C” (adjust vertical splay up and down, to cover extreme raked seating), or “Reverse J” (adjust vertical splay up, e.g. for bleacher seating coverage) dispersion patterns. Once set, the system automatically adjusts the EQ to maintain optimum tonal balance for each coverage pattern.
Engineered with an array of eight Bose proprietary 2.25-inch drivers, 100-degree horizontal waveguides, a high-powered 12-inch woofer and a lower crossover point, the F1 Model 812 loudspeaker (26.1″ H x 13.1″ W x 14.6″ D; 44.5 lbs.) delivers high SPL performance while maintaining vocal and mid-range clarity. For extended bass response, the optional Bose F1 Subwoofer (27″ H x 16.1″ W x 17.6″ D; 55 lbs. [688 x 410.16 x 448.5 mm; 24.9 kg]) packs all the power of a larger bass module into a more compact design. The loudspeaker and subwoofer have a combined 2,000 watts of power (1,000 watts each), able to fill nearly any venue with immersive sound. A Bose proprietary mounting stand for the loudspeaker is integrated right into the body of the subwoofer, making set-up fast and easy. The stand also includes cable channels to neatly hide the wires. Finally, the F1 Model 812 has been designed with features to facilitate fixed installations through threaded inserts and accessory pan and tilt and yoke brackets.

Panasonic Debuts 4K Projector That’s Really 5KPanasonic just introduced at InfoComm the PT-DZ21KU, the company’s first beyond 4K screen resolution projector. The PT-DZ21KU projector was shown performing image projection mapping onto a Tesla Model S (here’s the video we shot of it at InfoComm).
The PT-DZ21KU 4K+ Projector With 4K+ screen resolution (5,120×3,200) and Quad Pixel Drive technology and they say it is the most compact and lightweight 4K+ 3-chip DLP laser projector in the world. The projector is spec’d at 10,000 lumens of brightness and a contrast ratio of 20,000:1 using laser light. The projector’s pixel is shifted both horizontally and vertically at a high frame rate of 240 Hz, physically creating four different pixels from a single pixel, effectively quadrupling the pixel density of the image. To optimize for fluid, detailed, high-contrast images, the PT-DZ21KU leverages what they call a Detail Clarity Processor that analyzes pixel information. The new projector is spec’d at 20,000-hour light-source life. Providing system and installation flexibility, the Multi-Screen Support System allows screens to seamlessly join with edge blending, color matching and digital image enlarging. In addition, the PT-DZ21KU uses DIGITAL LINK — based on HDBaseT technology — that reduces cost and complexity of installation by allowing transmission of HD video, audio and control commands through a single CAT5e cable.
The PT-DZ21KU is aimed for a wide variety of applications including rental and staging, auditorium, museum, control room, and house of worship. The PT-DZ21KU will be available in the fall of 2015.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe Rental [and Staging] Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).
Don’t like us, then go away — unsubscribe! Just use the link below.
To send me feedback, don’t reply to this newsletter. Instead, write directly to me at gary@ravepubs.com or for editorial ideas, Editor-in-Chief Sara Abrons at sara@ravepubs.com
A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I’ve been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don’t think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue, which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe [Publications] has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.
Everything we publish is Opt-in — we spam NO ONE! rAVe ProAV Edition is our flagship ePublication with what we believe is a reach of virtually everyone in the ProAV market. rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA and launched in February 2004, is, by far, the largest ePub in the HomeAV market. We added rAVe Rental [and Staging] in November 2007, rAVe ED [Education] in May 2008 and then rAVe DS [Digital Signage] in January 2009. We added rAVe GHGav [Green, Healthcare & Government AV] in August 2010 and rAVe HOW [House of Worship] in July 2012.
