LG Commercial Displays in the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists Support the Creative & Educational Mission of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation

Giant Direct-View LG Cinema Display Installed by Moving iMage Technologies
Delivers Unparalleled Experience in the Center’s Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Screening Room.
The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists located in the heart of Los Angeles offers a chic, modern setting for all types of events – from premieres, For Your Consideration events and private screenings for up to 100 guests, to elegant receptions, intimate dinners and corporate presentations. This magnificent facility on the penthouse level at 5757 Wilshire Blvd. has been meticulously designed to cater to a variety of creative and corporate needs, ensuring a memorable experience for both hosts and guests.
The 15,000-square-foot world-class facility serves as an educational hub and creative home for all 160,000 SAG-AFTRA artists. Named in honor of Actors’ Council member and longtime SAG- AFTRA Foundation supporter Meryl Streep, the Center features voice-over recording sound booths, on-camera recording studios, tech labs, an editing bay and instructional classrooms, all equipped with advanced commercial displays provided by LG Electronics USA.
The centerpiece of the space is the 100-seat Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Screening Room, a state- of-the-art facility named in honor of two additional major supporters of the Foundation. The screening room, “Powered by LG,” hosts the Foundation’s Conversations programs and The Business panels. Members also enjoy film and television screenings on the stunning 200-inch LG “Miraclass” 4K direct view LED cinema screen, complemented by immersive surround sound. All seats in the screening room are dedicated to SAG-AFTRA performers who made significant contributions to the Foundation’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program to support their community in times of urgent need.
“From the start, we envisioned the Meryl Streep Center as a dynamic, multi-purpose facility that could support our members in every aspect of their creative careers,” said SAG-AFTRA Foundation Chief Operating Officer Charlotte Wells. “Having LG’s cutting-edge technology – especially the cinema display in the screening room – helps us realize that vision by providing professional-grade tools that elevate the entire experience for guests.”
The screening room is utilized for film screenings, internal presentations, interviews and web conferences. Because of its varied uses, a flexible screening solution was essential, especially given that many events are held in a lit room, necessitating a display that delivers a vivid performance in a lighted environment. Although a ceiling height restriction ruled out front projection, the technology wouldn’t have been suitable in any case, because of the lit presentation requirement.
The decision to install the Miraclass 4K LED cinema display came at the recommendation of leading cinema value-added reseller and integrator Moving iMage Technologies, Inc. (MiT), which had installed the same display at the CGV Cinemas Buena Park. MiT streamlined the LG Miraclass installation using its patented TruSquare™ cinema-centric direct view LED frame. MiT also integrated a state-of-the-art multichannel audio system in the screening room to complement the LG display and deliver the ultimate cinematic experience.
The Miraclass 4K DVLED display “provides gorgeous, precision image quality,” according to Frank Tees, MiT’s Technical Sales Support Vice President. “Direct view is more precise than projector technology and is suitable for screenings when the lights are on, allowing for more ambient light without sacrificing its image quality,” he said. “With its increased dynamic range, deep blacks and a wide color gamut with accurate, dynamic color representation, this display produces an image that takes your breath away – whether that’s for movie screenings or presentations.”
The 200-inch 4K LG Miraclass display is designed to deliver incredible picture quality and performance by combining 24-bit color processing with LG’s latest self-emissive LED pixels to reproduce 68.7 billion colors and near-perfect blacks, enabling outstanding contrast and accuracy for every film and visual style. Because each pixel is identical and lit individually, the screens exhibit brightness uniformity all the way to the last corner pixel, solving a key drawback of single-source projection solutions.
The display reproduces DCI-P3 colors just as movie directors intended. Composed of individual, self-emissive, 1.25mm pixel pitch LEDs, working independently, the resulting picture quality is bright and brilliant, with no corner dimming or image distortion. Consistent brightness and clarity from corner to corner of the screen allows audiences to fully immerse themselves in the viewing experience, wherever they sit. In addition, the half-brightness LED lifetime is approximately 100,000 hours – around twice that of comparable projection technology.
While projectors beam a small “display” of light onto a large reflective surface, compromising contrast ratios and uniformity of image – often resulting in soft focus at the projection screen’s edges – this isn’t an issue with the LG Direct View Miraclass 4K LED cinema display, which is native andresults in exact uniformity across the entire surface – corner to corner. Super-sharp focus andpinpoint brightness accuracy result in a noticeably improved “direct” viewing experience with a wider viewing angle – ideally suited for the Hanks-Wilson Screening Room.
“The design of the Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Screening Room presented a unique challenge, with itslow ceiling and intimate layout,” said Michael Kosla, B2B Senior Vice President, LG Electronics USA. “The LG Miraclass 4K LED cinema display was the ideal solution—not only eliminating the need for a projection booth but also delivering exceptional viewing angles and uniform brightness that ensure every seat, and even standing-room positions, offer a premium cinematic experience.”
The screening room already had a significant amount of existing technologies and cabling housed within what MiT’s Tees calls an “impressive” control room. MiT worked closely with LG on both engineering and product support during the build, with its field engineers designing and building the fabricated frame that supports the Miraclass on the small stage – with approval from SAG-AFTRA Foundation architects. Significantly, he said the screening room also boasts a “fairly unique” sound system, supported by design and acoustical engineering, so very little needed to be done in terms ofaudio, except for some final adjustments from pro audio experts Meyer Sound.
LG technology is featured throughout the MerylStreep Center for Performing Artists. Two 86-inch UHD signage displays are installed in the lobby and conference room / classroom, with five 65-inch UHD signage displays in the
reception area, program room, production suite, voiceover room and greenroom – while a 55-inch Quick Works all-in-one video conferencing display is housed in the editing bay. Elsewhere, a 32-inch full HD display and 43inch High Haze UHD display furnish the voiceover studio, with two 27-inch UltraFine PC monitors in the voiceover solo booth.
“The wide array of LG display technology throughout the Meryl Streep Center truly enhances our
programs,” said Wells. “The crown jewel is the LG cinema display in the Screening Room. It
delivers everything we want for the space, from world-class film screenings to presentations that look
just as good with the lights on as with them switched off.”
“We couldn’t be happier with how things have turned out. This has been a massive project, and we are beyond grateful for the deep expertise of LG and MiT in making this space the best it could be,” she said. “We knew it had to be the LG Miraclass 4K LED cinema display from the minute we enjoyed a viewing at CGV Cinemas Buena Park, and we are very pleased to be able to offer SAG-AFTRA members the same picture quality for our own programs and screenings.”
