Epson Reaches Settlement with AAXA Over Projector Brightness Claims

Epson

Epson has announced a settlement with AAXA concerning brightness claims made for the company’s P6U projector. Under the agreement, AAXA will correct its stated White Brightness specification for the P6U from 1,100 lumens to 500 lumens and adopt ISO 21118, the internationally recognized standard for measuring projector brightness, for its product line moving forward.

Epson said the settlement underscores the importance of using standardized brightness measurements to ensure consumers can make accurate product comparisons.

“When projector brands use the same, internationally developed standards, it protects consumers and establishes trust within the industry,” said Mike Isgrig, vice president of consumer sales and marketing at Epson America.

Epson noted that its complaint against AAXA was part of ongoing efforts to promote compliance with internationally accepted brightness standards. The company also cautioned consumers to be aware of alternative, non-standard brightness metrics such as “Lux,” “LED lumens” or “Lamp Brightness,” which are not based on ISO methodology and may mislead buyers.

Projector measurement standards are defined by groups including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM). ISO 21118, also adopted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), establishes how projector White Brightness is measured and reported.
