Tampa International Airport (TPA) is one of Florida’s largest airports, serving approximately 25 million passengers annually. With over 100 non-stop destinations across North America, South America, the Caribbean and Europe, TPA is a major hub for domestic and international travel. Known for its efficiency and customer satisfaction, TPA has earned numerous accolades, including top rankings from USA Today reader polls, Condé Nast Traveler, and JD Power and Associates. In 2025, Airports Council International named it the best airport in North America for its size, and in 2024, Travel+Leisure ranked it the eighth-best domestic airport in the U.S. TPA is celebrated for its accessibility, smooth check-in process and modern design, making it a favorite among travelers.

“TPA has a history of leading the way in innovation,” said Arch Nelson, director of themed entertainment experiences for Nanolumens. “Take their cell phone lot, for example. While they didn’t invent the concept, theirs is arguably the best – spacious, well-designed and user-friendly. They consistently set new standards, which is exciting because when they introduce something groundbreaking, we can showcase it to other airports as a model of excellence.”

For nearly a decade, TPA has relied on Nanolumens as its trusted LED provider, continuously investing in new technologies to enhance the passenger experience. From the airport’s first major LED installation to its most recent upgrades, Nanolumens has played a crucial role in bringing TPA’s digital vision to life. As the airport expands and modernizes, its partnership with Nanolumens ensures that travelers are met with vibrant, high-quality displays that provide essential information and engaging content.

“While LED technology offers excellent visibility from multiple angles, TPA took an extra step to enhance the viewing experience,” explained Nelson. “They integrated five-degree angle adjustments on back-to-back displays, a subtle yet significant design choice that adds to the overall aesthetic and functionality. This attention to detail sets them apart from other airports across the world.”

TPA’s commitment to forward-thinking technology and design ensures that every traveler passing through TPA benefits from a seamless, modern and engaging journey. Doug Wycoff, Director of Digital Technologies and Innovation for Tampa International Airport, has played a pivotal role in driving this vision forward, championing solutions that redefine how digital displays enhance airport environments.

“With Nanolumens’ LED displays, we’re creating a lasting investment. Traditional monitors might require frequent replacements, and when one fails in a video wall, replacing a single unit can make the entire setup look inconsistent. LED displays, on the other hand, provide a seamless, high-quality canvas that can last for a decade or more. Our first seven Nanolumens displays, installed over seven years ago, still perform like new. That longevity gives us confidence in every new project we take on. Most importantly, they always deliver a reliable, timely resolution when we need a custom solution – whether it’s a curved or flexible display.”

Tampa International Airport utilizes a range of Nanolumens displays, including the Nixel Curved Series, Engage 1.2 for Flight Information Displays (FIDs) and the Performance Series in the cell phone waiting lot to elevate the passenger experience. As a leader in U.S.-manufactured LED display technology, Nanolumens delivers vibrant, high-performance solutions that support real-time wayfinding, multilingual communication and immersive engagement. Designed to adapt to dynamic airport conditions, these displays enhance navigation, streamline passenger flow, and meet the evolving demands of modern transportation. With their reliability, vivid visuals and flexibility, Nanolumens’ solutions empower airports to transform digital communication, ensuring passengers receive up-to-the-minute information while creating a seamless and engaging travel experience.

“Nanolumens has always been a best-in-class provider, but what truly sets them apart – and makes our collaboration so successful – is their ability to adapt quickly,” explains Wycoff. “We thrive when working with partners who can pivot, adjust, and align with both our needs and their own goals.”

Wycoff added, “Nanolumens’ real value lies in the direct, high-level access we have to their leadership. When I need something, I can pick up the phone and call Arch, knowing that Nanolumens’ responsiveness will keep us moving forward efficiently. That kind of responsiveness is invaluable for an airport like TPA, where on-demand service is critical.”

Recently, TPA announced a significant investment in its future by constructing Airside D, a cutting-edge, 16-gate terminal designed to accommodate the region’s growing tourism, population and business needs. Set to open in 2028, the $1.5 billion facility will serve as TPA’s primary international arrivals and departures hub, helping the airport expand its capacity to welcome 35 million passengers annually by 2037.

“Looking ahead, we hope to expand our digital signage even further,” said Wycoff. “The baggage area still has older displays that could be upgraded, and our Flight Information Displays (FIDS) screen rollout is just beginning. Beyond that, major projects are on the horizon. We have plans to incorporate LED across the entire back wall in our upcoming ticket-level modernization. We’re also developing the Airside D terminal, which will undoubtedly feature significant LED installations. Nanolumens and our other partners will play a crucial role in these expansions over the next decade.”
