ENCO Unveils CloudCap Network to Bridge On-Prem and Cloud Captioning
ENCO unveiled a new cloud relay service that establishes a secure connection to on-prem captioning workflows, supporting third-party remote stenographers and captioning services in live broadcast environments. The new CloudCap Delivery Network acts as a bridge to ENCO DoCaption closed caption encoders, offering third-party captioners a direct and secure pathway into a broadcaster’s workflow. CloudCap also allows broadcasters the flexibility to work with any cloud-based captioning provider.
CloudCap’s launch coincides with the availability of ENCO’s DoCaption EN848 closed captioning encoder. Now shipping, the EN848 enables the automated conversion and delivery of captions and translations—whether produced in-house or via external services. The encoder is built for IP-based deployments and offers connectivity to cloud captioning providers like ENCO’s partner Verbit.
The EN848’s core function is to securely insert closed captions from any source while maintaining compliance with global captioning standards. Its dual connectivity options support redundant captioning workflows, with immediate failover from cloud-based to on-prem captioning if internet connectivity is lost. When connected to an EN848, CloudCap becomes part of a failsafe solution that ensures broadcasters remain compliant in the face of technical disruptions. CloudCap also supports the EN448 encoder for less intensive captioning needs.
Third-party captioners connected via CloudCap gain immediate access to the encoder’s user interface to configure services—without the hassle of traditional firewall rules or port forwarding. Once connected, human or AI-powered captioning services can listen to live audio streams from the encoder and return compliant caption data in real time. DoCaption encoders support a wide array of closed captioning standards, including CEA-608/CEA-708 and Teletext/OP47, across both modern and legacy protocols.
The EN848 is a 1RU unit featuring a software-defined, FPGA-based ultra-low-latency SDI captioning encoder and inserter. It works with both human and automatic speech recognition (ASR) captioning sources, whether on-prem or in the cloud. For local workflows, the EN848 includes a built-in server specifically designed to process ASR content from enCaption systems.
