A new research study commissioned by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA | KBIS) and CEDIA highlights the growing role of smart home technology in residential design and construction.

The report, based on a survey of kitchen, bath and interior designers, general contractors, remodelers, home technology integrators, and builders, found that homeowners completing projects with smart technology are allocating an average of 20% of their overall project budgets to smart home integration — more than $41,000 on average for a whole-home project.

The findings were discussed Sept. 3 in a Town Hall at CEDIA Expo in Denver by NKBA | KBIS Global President and CEO Bill Darcy and CEDIA Global President and CEO Daryl Friedman.

“Smart home integration can be a substantial investment — whether for new homeowners or those upgrading their current space — and when done thoughtfully, it delivers an elevated, safer and more seamless at-home experience,” Darcy said. “People aren’t looking for gimmicks. They want practical solutions that make everyday living easier, more efficient and more connected.”

Friedman emphasized that collaboration between designers and integrators is becoming essential. “Proper collaboration unlocks unique and innovative solutions tailored to every project and is shifting to become the new standard in home design — especially in the kitchen and bath, where so much technology is centered,” he said.

The report shows that 75% of respondents believe homeowners are the primary drivers of smart home adoption, while 61% said integrated technology is a “must-have” feature in future projects. Both organizations said they aim to increase awareness of the integrator’s role early in the design process, with the goal of aligning designers, builders and technology professionals in smarter, more connected homes.
