On the Other Hand
By Joel Rollins rAVe Columnist
Last month, we talked about the idea that the big voice in marketing and product success is now the small voice, the collective voice, and largely as established by social media. I gave many readers to think that I was in favor of the voice of the masses being the loudest voice.
Not necessarily.
A wise man once said that democracy was the principal of 1,000 people being smarter together than any one person, which is demonstrably not true in many cases. Unfortunately, autocracy, it’s converse, is based on the idea that one person can be smarter than 1,000 people, which is also demonstrably not true in many cases.
The problem with the masses is that they are by many standards less well-educated than in the past. Newspapers and journals gave way to television, which gave way to the Internet, which is currently giving way to social media. In each instance, the message became shorter, more condensed, more subject to opinion, and more driven by the momentary verdict of the masses. If you’re in advertising, this is your heyday. It is much easier to swing the opinion of the masses with short punchy messages that was to sway the opinion of an interested individual. You no longer need the white papers as much, if you can have a short video go viral on YouTube.
As I mentioned last month that I was off to ISE in Amsterdam, let me tell you a little about how last months commentary on the use of social media in trade shows rang true.
First, I was there working with the rAVe crew, who were covering the entire event in video, audio and text for the rAVe website and for social media. My prediction that the crowd would be Tweeting live about everything that was being introduced came true in spades. Not only was there an immediate announcement via Twitter and other social media sites each time a new announcement was made, it was immediately retweeted by dozens of groups that I follow, producing a digital noise floor that was hard to overcome. I had to shut off my tweets being forwarded because my email inbox on my cell phone was constantly full of the same announcement from dozens of people. So, obviously, my filtering technology needs to improve. Another thing that I noted about this was that there was very little factual commentary on the product demonstrations or announcements, only a lot of emoticons and Internet speak (ROTFL) attached to the same announcements.
The webpage coverage was obviously better. On the webpage, especially on our webpage, we had videos and actual demonstrations posted on hundreds and hundreds of new products and announcements. The savvy users on Twitter were Tweeting links to these pages, as opposed to just repeats of other tweets.
The manufacturers, and especially their marketing companies, were paying intense attention to all of this traffic. Many had it displayed constantly in their stands, and were commenting on it as it appeared, adding to the conversation, and to the noise.
What does this means all of us who are looking for information? Basically, to me, it means that the content of your message and your announcement is no longer enough. You must also get the noise level up. The problem there is getting heard among all the other people who are just getting the noise level up. Because there are a lot of them.
Goodness knows, there are a whole lot of new people specializing in how to get the message out right across social media (Thanks, Emily). And with time, they will adapt its use to the hectic environment of a trade show, and get better and better at this specialized application. In the meantime, is up to us to learn to use the incoming information stream better, and to employ the old-fashioned technique of paying attention to the thing in front of us without immediately listening to everyone else’s opinion on it.
So is the voice of the people the voice of God? In many ways it is, and always has been. In marketing, if you can get the crowd talking, you’ve achieved your first goal.
The new goal: to get them thinking. Leave a Comment

Barco Intros New Line of High Resolution Indoor LED Walls Barco introduced a new range of high-resolution indoor LED video walls. With a pixel pitch of only 1.6 mm, 1.9 mm, and 2.7 mm, the X series couples the benefits of LED visualization with very high resolution. They are positioning these for emerging video wall markets and new markets, including control rooms and boardrooms.
The Barco X Series have some interesting features – including front access, factory calibration, high-quality dimming, and they even claim an easy and fast installation.
Barco’s high-definition X Series are integrated with Barco’s Infinipix image processing platform. Infinipix drives all LED tiles at the highest image quality and with the highest color accuracy in and between tiles. The Infinipix technology also goes a step further in offering an extended form of signal redundancy: in the unlikely event that the data path between the tiles is interrupted, a redundant data path takes over to ensure that an uninterrupted image is displayed.
Although Barco’s LED walls are of the highest quality, there is still a slight chance that a pixel fails. When this happens, Barco’s “Pixel Fusion” technology (lighting up surrounding pixels) makes sure dead pixels are virtually unnoticeable. So, your wall remains fully operational.
Barco’s says their LED walls are designed to be set up quickly and easily, to perform from the first moment, and to have a minimum of maintenance downtime. Using super-precise mechanics and an innovative truss beam installation technology, our LED walls can be installed faster, cheaper and more accurately on uneven floors. Furthermore, the LEDs are perfectly calibrated when they leave the factory, so you have a perfect image from the start. The front access to the tiles also ensures faster and risk-free servicing.

DPA Microphones Launches d:fine In-Ear Headset Microphone DPA Microphones has launched a new version of the d:fine In-Ear Broadcast Headset Microphone. Targeted at broadcast hosts and guests who use in-ear monitors to communicate with their producers backstage or to hear foldback from people interviewed outside the studio. The microphone capsule can be either omnidirectional or directional.
The unit incorporates two cables — microphone and in-ear — that run parallel to give a clean look. A steel spring construction at the ear hook offers quick mounting around virtually any ear, while the cable to the integrated in-ear plug(s) can be lengthened or shortened to suit the user. Any excess cable can be wound up around the plug or placed behind the outer ear, while a cable steer at the headset mount controls the cable run down the neck. It is easy to adjust headset mount size and, by choosing between left and right ear orientation, it is even possible to give the broadcast host a ‘camera blind’ side.
For the new d:fine In-Ear, DPA has incorporated a miniature MicroDot connector for the microphone and a mini-jack for the in-ear component. Adapters are available to fit most professional wireless beltpacks.
Several combinations are available; the easiest-to-fit Single-Ear Mount, Single In-Ear construction or DPA’s Dual-Ear Mount with a Single In-Ear, which offers higher mounting safety but still leaves one ear free of a plug to preserve direct acoustical cues. There is also a Dual-Ear Mount with Dual In-Ear option for two-channel monitoring from producers or for stage monitoring for theater actors and singers.
While DPA has chosen black for its microphone and in-ear cables, it offers a choice of non-reflecting black/silver for its in-ear plugs and black, brown or beige for the ear hooks and microphone booms.

Barco Intros HD Media Servers, Content Creation Software at ISE Barco is launching new HD media servers at ISE — available in four models — that the company says will cover the entire workflow of video professionals, from design to operation. Thanks to the ‘Projection Study’ tool, the Barco media servers are ideally suited for rental and staging applications and 3D projection mappings, while they can also be used for fixed installation in entertainment venues and visitor attractions. The media servers will ship in March 2015.
With the Barco media servers, designers can turn buildings into video stories. The 3D Projection Study tool allows technical directors to choose the right equipment based on brightness and resolution requirements and determine the best projector placement. Another unique feature of the Barco media servers is that they offer templates that allow for content renewal, to simplify the technical design of video professionals’ workflow. And thanks to the automated warping and blending tools, users can easily control multi-screen setups.
End-to-end systems for show design, creation, setup and control that are powered by the X-Agora software, the Barco media servers simplify the task of bringing together different types of content to create large-scale media environments — such as projection shows on the sides of buildings. The user interface also follows the conventions of post-production applications. Barco says the systems are so easy to use that designers only need half a day of training to learn how to work with them. The web-based interface for scheduling allows non-experts to easily schedule and manage content for permanent installations as well.
The timeline-based content assembly and design tool enables users to create a 3D virtualization of their multimedia event. As it offers an exact simulation of the environment, users can test their entire show before show time and sell ideas to customers before the show is actually built. The tool enables preview and adjustment of both pre-rendered and real-time content by navigating in a 3D virtual environment and deploying it in physical space – all while staying in a single software environment. This also speeds projector setup and execution, leading to dramatically reduced costs.
And, with a drag and drop interface, the Barco media servers can interact with audiences’ mobile devices using a wide variety of particle effects, shaders and actions, like creating a water-ripple effect on a building.
The media servers come in four models — XHD-400, XHD-402, XHD-404 and XHD-200. They allow you to remotely monitor, control and synchronize your players from the controller PC and have a distributed content management system. The hardware consists of cutting edge graphic cards, solid state hard drives and optional input cards.

D.A.S. Expands Event Series D.A.S. just launched the new Event M210A — a three-way stage monitor in a double 10” “dual-band” configuration. The dual-band configuration allows twin 10″ loudspeakers to work in tandem for maximum power at low frequencies. Above the low frequency range, the advanced digital signal processing allows the 10″ speakers to operate independently in specific frequency ranges, eliminating off-axis interference between the drivers to maintain optimal polar and frequency response characteristics throughout the low and low-mid operating ranges.
The D.A.S. loudspeaker units have been teamed up with a single M-60 compression driver attached to a new, asymmetric waveguide. The purpose-designed unit offers a 20º Up-30º Down vertical coverage for precise pattern control in the artist´s listening area.
The Event M210A wedge is powered by a three channel Class D amplifier which provides 360 Watts peak per channel. The amp’s rear panel includes quality Neutrik XLR and powerCON connectors, status LEDS to facilitate setup.
The rugged M210A enclosure is manufactured using Baltic plywood and is finished with the durable ISO-flex protective coating. A powder-coated steel grille protects the D.A.S. components from damage.

For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe Rental [and Staging] Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue!
For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that’s why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad).
Don’t like us, then go away — unsubscribe! Just use the link below.
To send me feedback, don’t reply to this newsletter. Instead, write directly to me at gary@ravepubs.com or for editorial ideas, Editor-in-Chief Sara Abrons at sara@ravepubs.com
A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I’ve been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don’t think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue, which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe [Publications] has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition.
Everything we publish is Opt-in — we spam NO ONE! rAVe ProAV Edition is our flagship ePublication with what we believe is a reach of virtually everyone in the ProAV market. rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA and launched in February 2004, is, by far, the largest ePub in the HomeAV market. We added rAVe Rental [and Staging] in November 2007, rAVe ED [Education] in May 2008 and then rAVe DS [Digital Signage] in January 2009. We added rAVe GHGav [Green, Healthcare & Government AV] in August 2010 and rAVe HOW [House of Worship] in July 2012.
