Latest headlines: Gary Kayye on the new AVI-SPL and Whitlock Merger, Jeff Hastings on self-driving cars, plus news from Extron, Pearl Media, Martin Audio, LG Business Solutions and more

February 6, 2020 | Volume: 12 | Issue: 3

Hello, and welcome to the last issue of rAVe Digital Signage before we leave for ISE! Things are going well, and by well, I mean that they are busy, busy, busy.

Unless you live under a rock, I’m pretty sure you’ve seen the big news: AVI-SPL and Whitlock have “jointly announced the intention to merge,” which I’m pretty sure just means they’re merging. Does this give anyone else Gwyneth Paltrow/Chris Martin “conscious uncoupling” vibes? Sorry guys, I hope this decision works well for both companies, I just like to poke fun at official terminologies. ? Also, if you’re one of the poor unfortunate souls who don’t know what I’m talking about and are tired of me inserting random pop culture references in my stuff, feel free to just skip to the news.

Okay — here we go, back to the news — in today’s headlines: Brompton Technology is launching the Tessera S8 LED Processor at ISE 2020; Tripleplay announced Integration with the Mersive Solstice; Barco will expand its LED portfolio with the products it’s showing at ISE; and much, much more.

Happy reading!

COLUMNS

+ AVI-SPL and Whitlock to Merge into One Giant Global AV Integrator [Gary Kayye]

AVI-SPL and Whitlock have jointly announced an intention to merge (technically, it’s a “definitive agreement to merge”) — both will be held by portfolio company, Marlin Equity Partners (a global investment firm with over $6.7 billion of capital under management).

+ The Road Ahead for AV in Self-Driving Cars [Jeff Hastings]

As we turn the page on the 2010s, there’s a great deal of speculation about what this new decade will bring. Of course, nobody really knows what the future holds, but I’ve thought a lot about what’s ahead for the AV industry. One segment I find particularly interesting is the automotive space. At the CES tradeshow in Las Vegas this January, we saw a flurry of various crossover innovations bridging the automotive/CE divide, so it’s clear that future auto innovation will be driven largely by tech.
