The biggest UCC event of the year just happened last week — ZOOMTOPIA. Even some of Zoom’s competitors were there, maybe spying, but likely admitting their success. Zoom has not only rapidly dominated the cloud-based VTC market in less than five years but they’ve also impressed the entire ProAV channel — nearly every AV integrator is specifying Zoom, using Zoom or trying to partner with Zoom. I highly recommend you attend next year as Zoom founder, Eric Yuan, is not only brilliant but inspiring as a leader of the company — you’ll see what I mean when you go!

Speaking of Zoom, there are two new updates, but my favorite is that they’ve established an App Store, of sorts, to allow for third party developers to create apps right inside Zoom. This will allow for Zoom to, eventually, be completely operated without a PC or even a computer — it’s just a matter of time.

On the hardware front, InFocus intro’d new Mondopads — they look way, way better than the old ones. Mondopad invented the collaboration board market some five years ago and is now attempting to reinvent it and compete with the likes of Avocor, Sharp and Newline. I am heading out to the North Carolina State Fair today for some fun — we need it, statewide, as we’ve had a lot of hurricanes lately. I look forward to my annual trek to see the biggest pumpkin usually coming in at nearly 1,500 pounds. I hate pumpkin seeds and pumpkin pie — and all pumpkin things at Starbucks too, actually. But gimme some fried Oreos!

COLUMNS

+ On Diversity [Leonard Suskin]

Being listened to is a power, and giving others the same chances to be heard is a responsibility. It is important for those of us with unearned power and privilege to recognize that and to give others a chance. The world — and, in a smaller sense, our industry — will be stronger for the inclusion of more voices.

+ Building Product: Avoiding the Data-Driven Trap [Christopher Jaynes]

I’ve always preferred an ‘innovation driven – data validated’ approach to building new products – and I think it’s paid off. The innovation-led process focuses on some simple principles: direct and ongoing customer dialogues that are focused on framing problems to be solved; a creative phase that challenges the product designers to then provide an ideal solution; and data-validation then takes place around the innovative solution.
