Latest headlines: Gary Kayye on AV over IP in 2019, plus lots of news from ISE 2019 in Amsterdam

In one month, we saw the discontinuation of the Christie MicroTiles product line to the launch of a totally-new MicroTiles product line made from LED. Dozens of manufacturers call their own products “game-changers” all the time when they launch but, in this case, Christie is right. The MicroTiles LED are pretty-dang amazing. Here’s a video I shot with them, live, on the show floor at ISE last week. This is truly an integrated system and will make for an incredible digital signage platform for building some amazing displays.

In other DS news, BrightSign — the industry’s leading media player company, launched a cloud-based signage platform that BLOWS AWAY anything else out there. They call it BSN.cloud — and it is really three different clouds: Control Cloud, Management Cloud and the Content Cloud. The article on it is below and it’s worth reading and understanding what they are doing as it’s telegraphing their future direction – and likely the future of digital signage.

Finally, at ISE, I ran into the new Userful CEO, John Marshall. His system is sort-of a cloud-based signage platform that uses on-board memory in displays to send content. He was at ISE demo’ing it in the LG booth using their WebOS platform. Watch this interview.

+ 2019: The Year of AV-Over-IP — But Don’t Believe the Hype! [Gary Kayye]

There’s no doubt in my mind that 2019 will be the year we look back on that the industry transitioned from signal routing and distribution via HDMI and so-called “digital-media” to AV-over-IP. Certainly not the entire industry — just most of it. But buyer, specifier, installer and designer beware. Not all AV-over-IP is the same, not all AV-over-IP is interoperable and not all AV-over-IP is will work with routing everything.
