There’s a chance you subscribe to both our ProAV and HomeAV newsletters, in which case you may have heard the news.

It’s a somber week as we mourn the loss of our Kelly Johnson — rAVe’s accountant extraordinaire but, first, and most importantly, a wife, a mother and just an all-around beautiful person. As you can see in our first story below, there’s a piece titled, simply, by her name. As Sara Abrons wrote regarding Kelly’s legacy and the darkness that is COVID-19, “I have to think that there’s a remote possibility that some good can come from such a tragedy, though, if only so I can feel like it’s not all so completely senseless. So maybe you’ve read this far and it will make you hesitate or do a little more research or think, hey … this really is still hurting people, people I know, and I can do things a little differently.” We hope you read the story and the message inside of it.

Today, a simple black ribbon with Kelly’s name digitally etched onto it is displayed on our website, locked at the bottom-left of the page no matter where you scroll — up, down, left, right. The locked ribbon symbolizes the belief that Kelly will forever be with us, unfortunately even though it’s only in spirit.

COLUMNS

+ Kelly [Sara Abrons]

I’ve worked for Gary for a long time — 16 years or so now, by far the longest of anyone else at rAVe. But the person who’s been there the second longest is our accountant, Kelly Johnson, who has been with Gary and me at rAVe for 12 years. She died Monday from complications of COVID-19. She was 51.

+ Design Retainers Are Your Friend: Qualifying and Filtering Clients [Lee Distad]

Most of us learn the hard way that not everyone is an ideal customer for what you do. In fact, not everyone can be your customer — period — ideal or otherwise. That seems self-evident, yet we often find ourselves trying to make people our customers who shouldn’t be. Designing and installing residential AV systems is a long-term commitment, and it’s essential to determine if the dealer/customer relationship will be a positive one. That’s where charging design retainers comes in.
