“Whatever it damn well pleases.” –Fred Ampel on a system doing what it wants. Or hurricanes in the U.S. this season. Or my cat.

This action-packed edition features product news from a host of manufacturers. Among the top releases is Barco’s next entry to the collaboration market, products for the AV-over-IP market segment and Magewell’s new 4K capture card. See this and plenty more below.

AVIXA says the market is Up&Up in its Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis. It is expected the industry will reach $59.2 billion in 2018 and a staggering $71.4 billion in 2023. Speaking of market growth and analysis, Egan acquired Working Wall Solutions, Videxio and Pexip are merging, Kingswood (parent company of AVAD) bought WAVE Electronics and Spitfire Creative Technologies purchased Green Hippo.

Lastly, Leonard Suskin writes On Diversity this month. “The world — and, in a smaller sense, our industry — will be stronger for the inclusion of more voices.” Thanks for sharing, Leonard. And here is to growth in the diversity of people, thoughts and ideas as much as the financial growth expected for ProAV in the coming days, months and years.

COLUMNS

+ Berra’s Law [Dr. Frederick Ampel]

We have become a data-focused business, relying more and more on the models and predictions to guide us to solutions and offering confidence that what we expect to happen WILL happen. That’s all well and good, except for the intrusion of that ugly reality about the system doing whatever it damn well pleases.

+ On Diversity [Leonard Suskin]

Being listened to is a power, and giving others the same chances to be heard is a responsibility. It is important for those of us with unearned power and privilege to recognize that and to give others a chance. The world — and, in a smaller sense, our industry — will be stronger for the inclusion of more voices.
