Latest headlines: Extron enters AV over IP, Leonard Suskin on diversity, Lee Distad on gaming rooms, AVAD parent company buys WAVE Electronics, plus news from Premier Mounts, LG, Klipschorn, RTI and more

October 9, 2018 | Volume: 15 | Issue: 19.1

Although Extron’s ad this week is all about its new 4K/60 4:4:4 HDCP 2.2 compliant switchers, the big news from them this issue is the company’s entry into the AV-over-IP market. This is a big deal — the system allows you to decide how much bandwidth you use on the network. Of course using less affects quality, but the power to decide is in your hands, not the manufacturer’s. So, for those of you out there doing restaurant and bar installs, this is important. You can, for example, send more bandwidth to the larger displays (e.g., projectors) than those that are smaller — where it’s less noticeable. And, if what CEDIA (the show) claims is sure — that you are all getting into commercial AV installs — then this news matters too!

In the news section below, you’ll see a story about LG’s cool entry into the home energy storage business and you can become dealers for it! Plus, Savant intro’d a new Smart Entry line of products that look to unseat Control4.

Finally, check out Lee’s column this month on home gaming rooms — you’ll love it.

COLUMNS

+ On Diversity [Leonard Suskin]

Being listened to is a power, and giving others the same chances to be heard is a responsibility. It is important for those of us with unearned power and privilege to recognize that and to give others a chance. The world — and, in a smaller sense, our industry — will be stronger for the inclusion of more voices.

+ Gaming for Theater Rooms, Plus Ça Change [Lee Distad]

Gaming now occupies a place in end-users entertainment options that is as mainstream as a cable box. It’s entirely typical now for a media room or theater room install to incorporate at least one gaming console as a source and quite possibly more than one.
