Woman’s Hospital acquires Coronis Uniti display system to enhance breast cancer detection

barco1-0314Atlanta, Ga. USA – 24 November 2015 – Healthcare imaging specialist Barco is providing Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with a powerful diagnostic imaging solution to increase its ability to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages: the Coronis Uniti™ display system.

3D mammography, also known as “tomosynthesis,” is proven to result in earlier detection, fewer call backs for additional work-up, and greater accuracy in pinpointing abnormalities in breast cancer screenings. With early treatment the best way to reduce mortality, Woman’s Hospital is enhancing the speed and accuracy of breast cancer diagnosis by combining its double-reading mammogram review process with the latest 3D mammography technology from Barco, the Coronis Uniti™ display system.

Vast, high-res real estate expands radiologist’s field of vision
Boasting a large, 12 megapixel screen, the Coronis Uniti maximizes the radiologist’s field of vision to enable simultaneous viewing of MR, ultrasound, 2D and 3D mammography images. “I can read everything in the case with continuous proximity of all images without having to close applications or cover up my worklist on the nav head,” comments James Ruiz, MD, Radiologist and Breast Imaging Specialist at Woman’s Hospital.
Detect the subtlest details in all types of breast images
Barco’s patented I-Luminate™ technology is one of the key features that helps radiologists see the smallest artifacts in breast images by boosting display brightness 4 times the luminance of the typical mammography display. In fact, the Coronis Uniti with I-Luminate technology increases the detection probability by up to 30%, compared to a standard mammography display (calibrated at 500 cd/m²), according to a study conducted by Barco in 20121.

The Coronis Uniti also recently earned additional FDA clearance for specialty imaging exams, beyond the original indication for 2D and 3D mammography, to encompass multiple breast imaging modalities: breast MRI, breast ultrasound, CT and ultrasound, and vascular and gynecological ultrasound.

The ultimate multi-modality machine
The Coronis Uniti was designed to optimize radiologists’ workflow for a more efficient and comfortable reading experience. It is the first display that allows simultaneous viewing of 2D and 3D, grayscale and color, and static and dynamic images on the same screen.

Dual grayscale and color capabilities enable viewing of both ultrasound images and mammograms on the same display. The scale-to-fit capability reduces the need for panning and zooming, while innovative Intuitive Workflow features further streamline movement and enhance the reading experience. The result: clinicians can complete their studies faster with fewer keystrokes and less head motion, minimizing strain and fatigue.

“The ability to view color and grayscale simultaneously saves me at least 30 minutes over the course of a day, while reducing fatigue typically associated with moving color images back and forth between extended monitors,” continues Dr. Ruiz.

Innovative features like these have resulted in widespread popularity of the display system among the radiology community, with orders of the Coronis Uniti well surpassing the 1,000 mark.

Pioneering the next generation in diagnostic imaging
“As a long-time customer, Woman’s Hospital has experienced first-hand the breakthroughs we have achieved in digital breast imaging with each evolution of our diagnostic displays,” comments Lynda Domogalla, Vice President Product Marketing for Barco Healthcare. “We are pleased to provide the hospital, and hundreds of healthcare facilities across the globe, with the ultimate solution for reading efficiency, diagnostic accuracy and working comfort.”
