Tiny Tascam Audio Field Recorder Includes Timecode Too
Tascam announced the debut of the FR-AV2, a compact, high-resolution two-channel field recorder with timecode functionality. Designed for small to mid-size film and video productions, wedding and special event videography, and video journalism, the new FR-AV2 can handle professional recording tasks typically associated with larger recorders.
Most importantly, the FR-AV2 features dual analog-to-digital converters and 32-bit floating point resolution. By using dual ADCs, recordings are captured with greater dynamic range and detail, making it virtually impossible to clip a recording. When editing audio recorded in 32-bit float, quiet passages can be raised in level while louder parts can be lowered without introducing additional noise. The FR-AV2 is unique in that no other recorder of its size on the market offers support for capturing audio at 192 kHz. The combination of these two features and the use of Ultra HDDA preamps delivers unparalleled clarity and resolution.
The new Tascam recorder is also prepared for monitoring via Bluetooth. With the addition of the optional, inexpensive AK-BT2 Bluetooth adapter, FR-AV2 users can monitor the source audio wirelessly using Bluetooth-enabled headphones and earbuds. The ability to hear what is being recorded allows users to check the sound of their microphone placement, accurately monitor the level of the incoming signal, while alerting them to any unwanted background noise.
Tascam’s new recorder can generate timecode, allowing videographers to easily synchronize their cameras with high-quality audio. Receiving and synchronising timecode from other devices including JamSync is also possible. The optional AK-BT2 Bluetooth adapter even supports wireless Bluetooth timecode synchronization with Atomos UltraSync Blue products. And when used in conjunction with the free Tascam Recorder Connect app, up to five devices (FR-AV2 and DR-10L Pro) can be remotely controlled from an iOS or Android device.
The FR-AV2 can be integrated into a film or video rig of any size. Whether it is a full-size cinematic camera or a much smaller iPhone content creator setup, the recorder is small enough not to be a burden or take up valuable real estate. And the 2-inch colour LCD makes it very easy to use. The FR-AV2 can be used as a USB audio interface with two inputs and outputs via the USB-C port when connected to an iOS-, Mac- or Windows-based device.
