Staying wired

You know I love technology. I’m like a 10 year old in my adaptability to new technology, (and in other ways if you ask some of my friends). But in one aspect of technological progress, I’m a veritable Luddite.

For goodness sake, does EVERYTHING have to be wireless?

About 10 years ago a friend, whose company engineers and manufacturers one of the world’s finest wireless microphone systems, called out to me in their Infocomm booth “Joel, if you could replace every wireless microphone you own, what would you replace them with?”, thinking, of course, that I would endorse their mics. Instead, I quickly replied that I’d like to replace them, as much as possible, with XLR cable.

I mean, I love all my bluetooth devices.. and my 802.11 devices.. and my spread-spectrum devices…

But I really like, as a stager, the security of wired systems. Digital wireless is BETTER than older analog types, for sure, but seriously, why do I need to eliminate ALL cable? There is only so much available wireless bandwidth, and so many types of antennae and transmitters available on the market. The space is getting pretty full, and as evidence I give you the fact that organizations are now fighting over it.

So I miss the security of copper.. and regret the fact that the batteries in my bluetooth keyboard are dying right now…
