Spotlight: John Day- Founder of AV Hero

In my monthly blog series, I am highlighting some of the incredible people who work for the Audio Video Industry. In this post, we are profiling John Day. Here is a brief introduction.

1. Describe your journey in the AV industry? How did it start?

I started in the AV industry in 2008, making customer service calls to existing customers of a smaller integrator. In late 2008 I was hired to do sales for AVI Systems and worked there until 2011. 2011 – 2014 I worked in sales for a local, Southern California integration company called TekWorks. Mid 2014 I went back to AVI Systems as a sales person until October 2019.

2. How does a fresher conquer this industry?

Sales: BUILD RELATIONSHIPS! Get to know local manufacturer reps, attend networking events and be a giver. Operations: Get training and certifications and have a good attitude ; )

3. What are the positives of working in this industry?

Creating really cool experiences for people! Meeting lots of different people. Learning about different types of businesses. Industry is always changing so there’s always something to learn.

4. What in your opinion would you change in the industry?

Create more standard processes for getting projects done and taking care of customers. Make it easier for Customers to get help. Generally speaking I think companies need fewer sales people and more focus on operations and quality control.

5. Describe your ideal client? What do you wish clients to know before hiring you?

6. Describe a typical day in your life?

Sitting in front of my laptop…responding to Customers and HEROES, improving our platform and marketing AV HERO. Meeting with my amazing AV HERO team. Helping my wife with the kids.

8. How does someone stay relevant in this industry? Who are your role models in this industry?

Stay relevant by listening to customers. Stay relevant by being yourself. Stay relevant by laughing more often. My role models would be Elon Musk and Jeff Stoebner.

9. If you were not in this industry, what would you be doing instead?

Rock & roll for sure ; ) Maybe a side gig of making coffee. If all else failed I would become a janitor. The AV industry has been such an amazing blessing to me and my family!
