Sony Debuts New Streaming Media Player
Taking aim at Roku and Apple, Sony has launched an all-new media player, the SMP-200, which streams Netflix, Pandora, Hulu, YouTube, plus both 2D and 3D imaging. Priced at only $50, Sony’s SMP-200 is a wireless network appliance that outputs all content via HDMI and component video, upscaling it to 1080p.
Sony’s only hope for success for this media player is the price. This media player isn’t innovative or special — it’s just like all the others — but it’s only $50 (although that’s also the same price as a Roku streaming player). It’s not part of any sort of “eco-system,” like the AppleTV or Google’s Android OS, but it does play streaming content from wherever you want it.
