As part of its PDX Next modernization project, Portland International Airport has integrated Renkus-Heinz Iconyx Compact ICC12/3 loudspeakers into its newly redesigned main terminal, addressing complex audio challenges in a large, open-concept space.

The terminal overhaul — emphasizing openness, daylight and natural materials — created significant audio design obstacles due to the lack of traditional walls and ceilings to mount speakers. To overcome this, PAE and global consultancy Arup designed custom Integrated Technology Poles, modular units that house multiple systems, including loudspeakers, fire alarms, cameras, lighting and Wi-Fi.

“The open design of the terminal was intended to mimic the outdoors, with no traditional infrastructure to conceal speakers,” said Ryan Lalum, senior associate at PAE. “This required us to develop an innovative solution: the Integrated Technology Poles.”

Each pole was prefabricated off-site and delivered fully assembled, enabling efficient on-site installation. Made entirely of metal and rotatable for precise alignment, the poles support current needs while allowing for future expansion. The team used modeling software during design to ensure full coverage and compatibility.

The Renkus-Heinz ICC12/3 loudspeakers were selected for their beam-steering technology, which allows precise sound targeting in high-traffic areas while reducing interference in operational zones. Their compact profile enabled integration into the poles without compromising the terminal’s aesthetic.

“Renkus-Heinz’s beam-steering arrays provided the large coverage patterns and tight dispersion we needed,” Lalum said. “This allowed us to direct sound precisely where it was required, minimizing interference and ensuring intelligibility.”

Before deployment, the team conducted a full-scale mock-up in a hangar. According to Lalum, the test helped secure buy-in from the Port of Portland’s client team.

Each speaker is Dante-enabled, allowing for digital routing and remote monitoring. The system now delivers 100% audio coverage throughout the terminal for paging, wayfinding, and other announcements.

Installation of the first phase was completed in August 2024. Additional speakers and poles will be installed as construction continues.

“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” Lalum said. “Passengers and staff alike have noted the clarity of the announcements. Even in a bustling, open terminal, every message is crisp and intelligible.”

Renkus-Heinz supported the project with demo units, EASE files, and commissioning support. The collaboration between stakeholders, including PAE, Arup, and the Port of Portland, was cited as a key factor in the project’s success.
