Oh Right, The Analog Sunset!

Sunset_Marina

We’ve all found ourselves in the situation where we know something, so much so that we take it for granted.

In fact, we take it for granted to such an extent that, for all intents and purposes we forget it.

I just had a moment like that.

Last week, my father expressed an interest in cutting the cord and getting rid of cable TV, so he wanted advice on what the best solution would be to avail himself of Netflix and other online content options.

So, rather than just going with the pat “You need an AppleTV unit.” I resolved to actually do some, you know, research, on which content box would best meet his needs.

Well, my research was going fine when I realized something:

All these boxes only have HDMI.

My dad’s TV, which I sold to him 11 years ago is a 27-inch Panasonic  CRT.

Yeah.

It’s comical that I forgot all about the Analog Sunset, especially considering how much coverage I gave it, both here at rAVe Pubs, and other places.

D’oh!

Now that I’ve identified the problem, time to find a solution.

Of course, Design Maxim 101: Is that “Every solution has two problems.”

And while the temptation to find a HDMI-to-YPbPr workaround that’s something like this:

Is almost overwhelming, that brings me to Design Maxim 102: “Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.

So really, if he wants Netflix the best solution is to buy a new TV.

It’s a shame to get rid of his old one, because while it’s 11 years old it’s likely to last for 11 more. You probably can’t say the same for any LCD, LED or Plasma set available today.

Sigh. Progress.
