A new professional USB switch and extender, providing an innovative and cost effective solution connecting eight PCs to up to eight remote USB receivers, using CAT6 cabling, has been launched by Smart-e Limited.

The remotely powered receivers can be installed up to 100m from the PC (HID devices will reach up to 300m) with each one connecting to up to four bus-powered USB peripherals such as a keyboard, mouse, memory stick and touch screen. PC selection is via standard Smart-e control protocol, which allows for a fully integrated KVM solution when used in parallel with Smart-e video matrices, together with independent control panels.

Capable of high speed 36Mbps connectivity for both USB V1.1 and V2.0 devices, the Smart-e USB switch features ‘break before make switching’, and is a compact IU to fit a 19 inch rack. Available as an 8×4 or 8×8, modular output modules allow for future on-site upgrades.

Designed and developed in the UK by the audio visual equipment company, the new solution is ideal for IT network management, command and control applications including mobile response units, interactive screens within museums and visitor attraction centres, as well as other digital signage applications.

Combine with a video switch: Centralised video distribution can be enhanced to provide interactive functionality and features by adding the USB-8×8 to a video matrix.
