Mentoring: It’s Easier Than You Think!

When you think of the word mentor, what images come to mind? Do you think of a trusted professor wearing an elbow-patched blazer that guided you through college? Do you think of a work colleague that has more years in the company than you? Is your friend or sibling your mentor?

Up until recently, those were the images of a mentor to me. I always assumed that I would know who my mentor would be and who I would be mentoring. The funny thing about that is that mentoring was never outlined for me in black and white, as I assumed it would be. I never asked for someone to be my mentor, but I realize now that I’ve had many positive influencers in my life that I would consider my mentors. These influencers are people that I look up to and have provided me with guidance that allows me to be the best person that I can be.

I was pleasantly surprised six months ago when a friend told me that she considered me as her mentor. I was taken aback, as I didn’t think that I had that “professor in a tweed coat” vibe. When I asked her why I was her mentor she told me, “You always support me and push me to be better.” Here I thought that I was just being a good friend, but in reality my positive behavior and encouragement has allowed my friend to flourish in her career and life.

My advice to you is to take a moment to evaluate the influencers in your life. Think about how your interactions with these people affect your achievements and career. Then take a moment to think about your influence on others and how you can positively affect the people around you. You never know, you may be as surprised as I was to learn that you are already mentoring someone!
