OK, I don’t write product reviews – and this product really has very little to do with my own field of AV rental and staging. But when I saw it, I was so taken by the idea that I had to share it with you. The product is Collabracam, a software program for the iPhone that allows you to use one iPhone to direct four others in a collaborative, multi-camera shoot. It allows the phones, connected over localwi-fi, to act as remote HD cameras, and for the “Director’s” phone to assemble the shots, title them, and send silent instructions for shots to the other cameras. I immediately seized on the idea for two reasons – it could make a good tool to teach the principles of a multi-camera rig, and could also be used in pleces like Egypt and Libya to allow “clandestine” coverage of news events. No, it won’t have iPhones in use in staging… but the concept is so different that I can see a dozen personal uses for it. It shows great imagination, and another glimpse at how todays portable electronics can change an industry. Check it out at collabracam.com.
