Here’s How the Brooklyn Paramount Theater Added Immersive Projection Mapping to Performances
The Brooklyn Paramount Theater has been transformed into a concert venue, reviving its historic legacy as a cultural landmark. Once known for premiering Paramount Pictures films and hosting icons like Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby, and Ella Fitzgerald, the theater later became a 1,200-seat multi-purpose arena and the home court for the Brooklyn Kings basketball team. In 2015, plans were set in motion to restore the theater for live performances, with Live Nation overseeing the project. From 2017 to 2023, the theater underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation, blending historic architecture with modern performance technology.
Reopening in March 2024, the venue now offers a state-of-the-art concert experience while preserving its architectural grandeur. A standout feature of the renovation is the immersive projection mapping display in the theater’s arched entry hall, which brings the ceiling to life each night before performances.
Electrosonic was chosen to design, engineer, and integrate audiovisual technology throughout the venue. To create a fully immersive visual experience, the company selected Realmotion, a real-time media platform that enables the development, execution, and monitoring of next-generation interactive environments.
The theater’s arched ceiling presented a challenge due to its intricate architecture and curvature. Achieving seamless projection mapping across multiple projectors typically requires extensive manual calibration to avoid distortions and visible seams. To overcome this, Realmotion partnered with Scalable Display Technologies to implement automated projection mapping and edge blending.
Using Realmotion’s G8 media server for content delivery, the team integrated Scalable Display Technologies’ Display Manager, a software solution that uses computer vision to align and blend projectors automatically. This system creates precise corrections and seamless blending, ensuring that projected content aligns perfectly with the theater’s architectural details. If a projector shifts due to maintenance or normal use, Scalable’s software recalibrates the system quickly, minimizing downtime and reducing the need for labor-intensive adjustments.
With Scalable Display Technologies and Realmotion, the Brooklyn Paramount Theater has achieved a visually stunning immersive experience, captivating audiences from the moment they enter. The system runs regular recalibrations to maintain pixel-perfect alignment and ensure long-term visual integrity, seamlessly blending tradition with cutting-edge entertainment technology.
