Kennesaw State University’s Dance Theater sought to enhance its theatrical atmosphere and create depth and dimension on stage. By integrating cutting-edge laser projection technology, the theater has created an engaging and visually dynamic performance space. The state-of-the-art venue, located on the Marietta campus, is home to Georgia’s largest undergraduate dance program. The theater features the Epson EB-PU2216B projector, which delivers 16,000 lumens of color brightness (IDMS rated) and 16,000 lumens of white brightness (ISO rated). This advanced technology transforms simple sets into immersive, visually stunning productions.

Theater lighting is crucial for setting the mood, enhancing the atmosphere, and guiding the audience’s journey, with each theater requiring a unique setup. “Live dance and theater projection goes beyond the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio flat surface,” said Colby Nordberg, lead technician for the Dance Theater at Kennesaw State University. “Often, the projection area is much taller or wider, and we frequently incorporate surrounding spaces, like side walls and floors, to fully immerse the audience and elevate the production.”

The Kennesaw State University Dance Theater, which opened in March 2017, serves as a hub for dance and theater in the region. Designed specifically for dance, the 435-seat facility boasts professional-grade flooring, lighting, and AV technology. Its unique contemporary aesthetic, including its seating and interior design, sets it apart from other venues in the area. Projection technology is used to transform the space uniquely for each performance, enhancing the audience’s experience during live shows.

Nordberg selected the EB-PU2216B laser projector to simplify the theater’s projection system. “Before this model, I used three large projectors to create a blended projection surface for the entire cyclorama (cyc). This setup was fragile and required constant maintenance to keep the alignment intact,” he said. “The EB-PU2216B has streamlined our approach while also enhancing the quality of our projections, making them significantly brighter.”

Maximizing the stage space is essential for providing dancers and actors the room to hone their craft. “By pairing the projector with Epson’s ultra-short throw lens, performers can move much closer to the back wall and use the stage space more effectively without casting shadows or worrying about the projector,” Nordberg added.

The EB-PU2216B has become an integral tool for the Kennesaw State University Dance Theater, benefiting engineers, performers, and audiences alike by improving both technical and visual aspects of the productions. “The internal mechanical shutter is incredibly valuable for theater applications,” Nordberg noted. “And the adjustable fade time control is perfect for smooth, seamless transitions. I wish all projectors had this feature.”

Nordberg also highlighted the quiet operation of the projector’s laser light source, which minimizes distractions for audiences and performers. With no lamps to replace and an air filter-free design, the projector is a cost-effective, low-maintenance solution. This is especially important as the projector is installed 25 feet above the stage.

The high brightness of the EB-PU2216B has also been a game-changer. “The projector is incredibly bright on our white cyc,” Nordberg said. “Using projection on stage requires a balance between the lighting designer and video designer to avoid washing out the projected images with stage lights. A bright projector like this one, combined with knowledgeable designers, allows us to maintain the artistic vision without making significant sacrifices.”

“Video projection in theatrical shows transforms a stage into a dynamic, engaging experience, captivating audiences in ways that were previously unimaginable,” said Ramzi Shakra, senior product manager, Projection, Epson America, Inc. “We are thrilled the EB-PU2216B has enriched performances at Kennesaw State University. Paired with our ultra-short throw lens, it provides performers with increased stage space to express their art, while streamlining the technical aspects needed for these shows. Our goal is to provide technology that enhances the energy and artistry of live performances, creating an imaginative experience.”
