Here’s How EAW Solved the Most Popular Audio Acoustic Issue in Churches Today

Custer Road United Methodist Church (Custer Road UMC) faced challenges with its sanctuary’s traditional architecture and high ceilings, which created audio issues that hindered the congregation’s ability to fully engage during services. Church leadership sought to upgrade the audio system to provide clear, consistent sound that matched the sanctuary’s recent renovations.

“The church underwent a major renovation, and part of that effort was to ensure the technical systems were up to date,” said Shawn Slocum, Account Manager at Electro Acoustics. The solution was EAW’s AC6 ADAPTive loudspeaker system, chosen after a demonstration led by Clayton Mills, Sales Manager at Highway Marketing. “We needed a space for an AC6 training session, and the church graciously offered its sanctuary,” said Mills. “After hearing the system in action, the church immediately recognized it as the right solution.”

Electro Acoustics collaborated with Highway Marketing and EAW to design a custom audio solution. The installation included triple-stacked AC6 speakers on each side of the sanctuary, EAW’s MKD526 loudspeakers for under-balcony fills, and SB828P subwoofers for enhanced low-end sound. To blend with the sanctuary’s architecture, the speakers were custom-painted to match the interior.

Powered by EAW’s Resolution software, the AC6 system’s adaptive technology provided precise sound coverage, addressing acoustical challenges such as the 43-foot ceiling and wraparound balcony. “The new system has drastically improved audio quality,” said Slocum. “It brings the sound closer to the congregation, making the experience more intimate and ensuring every seat receives clear, consistent audio.”

Since the installation, the church has reported improved microphone gain before feedback and greater clarity for both spoken word and music. “The renovation has significantly increased intelligibility,” said Jim Carter, Director of A/V and Computer Services at Custer Road UMC. “With positive feedback from the congregation and staff, we’ve achieved our goals. EAW’s products have allowed us to succeed and prepare for the future.”

The new audio system has transformed Custer Road UMC’s sanctuary, seamlessly integrating modern audio technology with traditional architecture. With EAW’s AC6 ADAPTive Loudspeakers, the church has created a worship space where both sight and sound enhance the experience, enabling full participation for all attendees.
