Google announced the company has been working to perfect Project Starline — a technology project that combines hardware and software to enable friends, families and co-workers to “feel together” — for years. And, the demo was stunning.

Watch this video so you’ll understand what I am writing about here:

To make this experience possible, Google is using computer vision, machine learning, spatial audio and real-time compression. Google also said they’re developing a “new kind of display system” that uses “light field display technology” to create a sense of volume and depth with no need for additional glasses or headsets. The effect is the feeling of a person sitting just across from you, as if they are right there. It’s true. I was stunned.

Project Starline is currently available in just a few of Google’s offices, including San Francisco, New York, London and Seattle. They announced their goal is to make this technology more affordable and accessible, including bringing some of these technological advancements into Google Meet.
