Extron just announced (and says it is ready to ship) the XTP II CP HD 8K I/O Boards — yes, 8K resolution (up to 7680×4320). The XTP II CP HD 8K I/O Boards accept HDMI 2.1 data rates up to 40.1 gigabits per second, enabling support of uncompressed 8K video with HDR. These HDCP 2.3-compliant boards provide input equalization and output re-clocking and feature connections for powering active, Ultra High Speed HDMI cables.

The XTP II CP HD 8K I/O Boards leverage the 50-Gbps backplane of XTP II CrossPoint Series matrix switchers to deliver a future-proof AV infrastructure that supports convenient growth and upgrade without needing to replace equipment.

This is a major introduction as it literally represents the first fully matrix-able 8K distribution system to not require any compression of the signal — passing through full 4:4:4 chroma sampling too. And, by the way, Extron says if you currently have an XTP installed, you can simply add the 8K card to make it 8K capable — no other additional hardware is required. And, you can do it inside the exiting rack.

Here’s a chart of the card’s compatibility:

The XTP II CrossPoint Series matrix switchers would now be, technically, the highest bandwidth in the industry to route of all the way up to 8K video, audio, bidirectional control and Ethernet. The 50-Gbps backplane accommodates the combination of resolutions, frame rates and color bit depths supported within the HDMI 2.1 specification.
