Cross-Platform Development in AV and IT

crossplatformIt was six months ago that I purchased my new Windows laptop, as my old trusty Windows 7 laptop finally started to sputter. The new laptop was faster and ran on the new Windows 8 platform that I couldn’t wait to get on. Now there are those who won’t leave Windows 7 (and for justified reasons) as well as Vista, although they won’t have much choice very soon. It wasn’t long after that I purchased the new iPad 4. Why? Maybe because it was cool (with the new Retina Display), at least I thought so at the time. I actually decided to return it after about a month of problems for a full refund. The next day, my next technology purchase was the  Microsoft Surface Pro, the most powerful tablet/laptop that hit the market by storm. And as a new Microsoft Partner company, I felt the need to have one.

So what was it about the iOS platform that I turned my back on? Well it didn’t take long for me to return to the Apple Store to check out the iPad Mini. And not only did I check it out, I bought it on the spot. Now you may be asking yourself (and I figure you are), “What in the world does he need with all of this technology?” I’m getting to that. While the Surface Pro slowly became my laptop of choice, the other laptop became my home portable (you know, from desk to kitchen table). You ask about the iPad? Not only has it become my seven day companion for on the go email, tweeting and more, it had actually become the piece of equipment I have been using for cloud video conferencing, again on the go. That is the wonder of cloud video conferencing, set  it up in no time and bring your devices to the conference, wherever you are.

So you ask about the cross-platform development concept? Are Windows and iOS (which I am now working with on applications in education and healthcare) enough to satisfy the need? I participate in various LinkedIn groups and have been seeing more and more discussion of Android devices being considered for certain applications (well as iPads). I am looking at applications that are interactive in the classroom as well as others pertinent to business and healthcare. So the next step? A purchase of an Android tablet and cell phone (package deal you know), the Android phone replaced my other as my primary phone. And to top it all off, today I got in touch with my good friend on the west coast who I do work with and asked if he could set up a Vidyoconference to test my Android phone. The result — crystal clear video and voice transmission over the Cloud.

So you ask is that enough technology? And my answer is: It’s never enough.
