Christie’s Griffyn 4K50-RGB pure laser projectors are at the center of “Revisiting Journey to the West,” a new nighttime spectacle that merges mythology, performance, and cutting-edge visual technology at the Doupotang Waterfall in Guizhou, China. The immersive show revisits stories from the beloved 1986 television adaptation of “Journey to the West,” bringing them to life through light, sound, and motion.
Installed and commissioned by Shenzhen Guangming Huachuang Technology Co., Ltd., the project features seven Griffyn 4K50-RGB projectors that transform the waterfall and surrounding cliffs into a massive natural screen. Three projectors blend a 56-meter-wide by 13-meter-high image across the waterfall, three more illuminate a 42-meter by 10-meter water curtain, and one projects a vivid Buddha figure onto a 20-meter-wide cliff face.
“The Christie Griffyn 4K50-RGB projectors delivered exceptional brightness and color fidelity, perfectly realizing the director’s vision across every detail from the cascading waterfall to the cliff-face imagery,” said Di Zhang, spokesperson for Guangming Huachuang. “This landmark project showcases how technology can elevate artistic storytelling while pushing new boundaries in cultural integration, creative design, and technical excellence within China’s cultural tourism sector.”
Gene Wang, director of ProAV sales for China at Christie, added, “We’re thrilled to see the Griffyn 4K50-RGB projectors bring this visually and culturally significant production to life. It highlights Christie’s technological leadership in cultural tourism and outdoor immersive entertainment, and reflects our ongoing commitment to empowering creativity through innovation.”
The installation employed Christie’s advanced warping and blending tools to maintain color and geometry accuracy across dynamic surfaces, including moving water. Each projector is housed in a custom IP65-rated enclosure to ensure stable outdoor operation. The project’s development involved precision surveying, 3D simulation, and close collaboration between engineers and creative producers to optimize brightness and alignment.
Since opening, “Revisiting Journey to the West” has received multiple honors, including the China Lighting Award (Second Prize) and the Aladdin Magic Lamp Award for Outstanding Lighting Project. It was also named a national pilot project for immersive tourism and recognized among Ctrip’s Top 100 Asian Night Tourism Attractions for 2025.
Delivering 50,000 lumens of brightness, native 4K resolution, and more than 98% of the Rec. 2020 color gamut, the Christie Griffyn 4K50-RGB is the lightest and brightest projector in its class. Its RGB pure laser illumination offers precise color reproduction, high contrast, and quiet operation, making it well suited for large-scale attractions, live events, and outdoor projection environments.
