CEDIA Urges Senate to Support Expansion of 529 Education Savings Plans

CEDIA is calling on U.S. Senators to support legislation that would expand the scope of Section 529 education savings plans to include job training and certification programs. The proposal is included in a federal tax package that passed the U.S. House and incorporates provisions from the bipartisan Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act.

The bill would allow 529 plan funds to be used for post-secondary training, nongovernmental certifications and professional licenses — benefiting technical workers and industries facing skilled labor shortages, including the smart home technology sector.

In March, CEDIA representatives met with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., during the association’s annual Hill Day to advocate for the expansion. The organization has made workforce development a legislative priority, citing the growing demand for certified professionals in home technology integration.

Supporters say the measure would modernize the tax-advantaged 529 program to better reflect the needs of today’s workforce and provide more flexible pathways to employment.

CEDIA is encouraging industry professionals and stakeholders to contact their U.S. Senators and voice support for including the 529 expansion in the final version of the tax package.
