Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Culture have adopted Quicklink’s Studio (ST55) solution to allow students to gain a broad set of digital production skills by using industry-standard solutions.

The Quicklink Studio solution is used to incorporate contributions from remote guests using a laptop or mobile device for inclusion in news bulletins at the University’s studios. The solution is also used daily from the Senedd Cymru (Welsh Parliament) at Cardiff Bay, and other locations around the City to gather high-quality video feeds from reporters on location.

For reporters on-location at the Senedd, and other locations around Cardiff, reporters are equipped with an iPhone mounted to a Manfrotto Monopod. An iRig is used to break audio to XLR and headphone jack. Using Quicklink Studio, the MoJo equipped iPhone is then placed in a two-way call with a Quicklink ST100 located within Cardiff University’s studios using the Quicklink Manager – creating a bi-directional, high-quality remote contribution to be included in a live production.

“The Quicklink solutions have allowed our students to gain practical skills on outside broadcast type news gathering as part of their courses. This includes the setting up of the kit on-location, and preforming pieces to camera live into the news bulletins at the University TV studios.” said Andrew Jenkins, Senior Broadcast Technician at Cardiff University.

The Quicklink Studio (ST55) enables the gathering of high-quality remote contributions from a laptop or mobile device with no apps or software installations required. Contributors can be invited using an operator generated, shareable URL link. From the Quicklink Manager, the operator is then able to remotely control and configure the contributor’s camera, microphone, speaker settings, resolution, data bandwidth and latency if required.

Andrew continued: “The Quicklink solutions have provided a new teaching and learning experience for both the staff and students, which will benefit the students when they work in the industry in the future”.
