AVDistanceCalc – iPhone Viewing Distance Calculator

AvDC_114x114Many readers that follow my musings on rAVe BlogSquad may have also seen my own AV related blog,ProAVSchool.com. As a long-time industry member, I have come to realize how challenging it can be to learn the ins and outs of the Pro AV field, as there aren’t a lot of comprehensive resources available. The goal ofProAVSchool is to fill that need for instructional information. By doing this, I intend to help our industry grow through the sharing of information and tips that

One of my most popular posts to date on ProAVSchool detailed the importance of viewing distance and text size. Some of the formulas and rules of thumb for calculating maximum viewing distance were discussed and broken down for further analysis. The one that I find most useful is based on the idea that you should be no farther than 150 times the height of the text if you want to be able to read comfortably and follow along without getting easily distracted. This is found in some ofinfoComm’s courses, I can’t remember the specific one(s).

In working through the aforementioned post, I came to the realization that these calculations, while very straight forward, were a pain to do. Wouldn’t it be nice to have an easy way to perform these calculations without having to spend a lot of time? Since I am an iPhone programmer, it just made sense to create this app for the benefit of the AV community. If you have followed me online for any amount of time, you would know that my goal is to provide valuable content, not make a quick buck. The app isn’t free, but at $.99 covers the cost of my time to create it.

You can find AVDistanceCalc in the Apple App store. If you have any suggestions for future improvements to the app, please let me know. I know this was a bit of a short post, but don’t worry –  I will be back after the holidays with more AV tips.
