AV Insider Spotlight : Shibu Varghese, Consultant

 Each week, I am highlighting on some of the incredible people who are in the Audio Video Industry. As this blog is mostly about AV insiders, today we are profiling Shibu Varghese.
Here is a brief intro about him.
Shibu Varghese has worked in the Audiovisual industry for over 5 years.   From a GUI designer to a programmer to co founding a programming services company dealing with AMX and Crestron, Shibu has done it all.

1.Describe your journey in the AV industry? How did it start?

My journey in AV industry began on Feb 2011 about 5 years ago with me wanting to have change in my career from HR recruiting field back into technical field.

Armed with a limited knowledge on AV and automation systems from my housemates / roommates I took the plunge.

 

2.What do you think is the challenges that are facing a new person who wants to join the industry.

a) career scope and growth in this industry.
b) Lack of clear information on AV field in India
c) No one-stop website to refer on all AV concepts.
d) poor remuneration
e) lack of mentorship /guidance at work place
 

3.What are the positives of working in this industry

In my opinion, positives in this industry will come only after first 2 years.
By this time your AV skills are above average.You dont blow up controllers anymore.Your linkedin network is growing.
 
(+) Develop diverse skillset from coding,gui designing, hardware, networking,  etc.
(+)You have a level of independence on how you code/design ui.
(+) Greater understanding of all current technologies.
(+) You could choose to stay/ change AV programmer, or AV installer or AV integrator, or consultant or technician or AV marketing or UI expert.
(+) International travel and stay.
(+) Get lucrative offers from Middle East.
(+) Starting your own company since AV is multibillion dollar industry

(+) Develop greater communication skills

4.What in your opinion would you change in the industry? What are the negatives that are prevalent ?
 

Negatives prevalent in AV industry:

Very less systematic approach
High work expectations with a shoestring budget
 
5.Describe your ideal client? What do you wish clients to know before hiring you.

Ideal client for me would be any SI who

a) has proper documentation (schematics, SOW, BOQ,video flow,audio flow) before job starts.

b) does not keep changing requirements/SOW every 3 days
c) understands device limitations and is technically sound
d) has no demo coming up in next 48 hours
e) Least maintenance and High profit
 

6.If you were going to start over, what would you do differently ?

Keep asking more questions

Have a technical journal/diary

 

7.Describe a typical work day for you. What are your daily disciplines?

a) check gmail/slack for any new mails or pending work.
b) pull work from bitbucket/start new work on bitbucket
c) commit/upload work done
d) check other
