If you’ve also been curious about what in the world the metaverse is … have I got an excellent column for you. In his most recent article, Scott Tiner explains what the metaverse is and why it should matter to those of us in the AV industry. Does it matter that we can use game currency across games and possibly eventually in the real world? This is one of those things that I think we need to wait out and see. It could be the next big thing, or it could burn out in a few months.

Also, Mark Coxon makes a good point about ear health. Many of us have been wearing AirPods and other earbuds during the pandemic. But wearing these too often can damage the ear canal due to impacted wax. Therefore, it’s considered better by many doctors to wear over-ear headphones. What do you think? Is one really better than the other?

Have a great weekend!

COLUMNS

+ What in the Universe Is the Metaverse [Scott Tiner]

In IT (and therefore AV as well), we certainly don’t have a shortage of our acronyms and buzzwords. When Meta, formerly known as Facebook, changed its name in October, the newest buzzword, “metaverse,” exploded into our feeds. We have heard the word countless times, but what the heck does it really mean? What, after all, is “the metaverse?”

+ A Case for Over-ear Headphones [Mark Coxon]

It’s best to use your AirPods for short-term activities that require light and mobile devices. For other tasks or activities like Zoom calls at a desk, online classes and watching videos, it seems extremely advantageous to have a secondary set of over-the-ear wireless headphones that allow your ears to breathe and stay healthy.
