Latest headlines: Paul Konikowski on the vulnerabilities found in the Owl Labs Meeting Owls, Bob Snyder on the Google Duo rebrand and more

August 22, 2022 | Volume: 8 | Issue: 16

Paul Konikowski joined rAVe [TV] just a few weeks ago to talk about this piece — if you caught that segment of the show (or even if you didn’t), the coinciding article teaches a lot about the vulnerabilities at Owl Labs. Earlier this year, researchers at Modzero discovered some cybersecurity problems with the Meeting Owl devices. Find out how the company responded and what this means to the industry by reading here.

What else? Google Duo will rebrand as Meet. Yes, there is already a Meet. So what will this mean? Will there be two Meets? Will the Meets become one? Read to find out.

That’s about all from me, folks. Don’t forget to register for LAVNCH WEEK 6 if you haven’t already and I’ll see you Oct. 24-27!

Enjoy the rest of your week!

+ #HootHoot Meeting Owls Security Vulnerabilities Have Been Patched, Have Yours? [Paul Konikowski]

In January 2022, cybersecurity researchers at Modzero reported a handful of security vulnerabilities to Owl Labs regarding their 360-degree video conferencing Meeting Owl, Meeting Owl Pro, Meeting Owl 3, and Whiteboard Owl. In May, Owl Labs released patches for these vulnerabilities. As an industry, we need to do better. Not just in our quickness in responding to security concerns, but in general. I will expand on that more later in this article. First, let’s talk about the associated CVEs.

+ Allo, Google? [Bob Snyder]

Google’s Duo will rebrand as Meet with the features from both apps. But Google’s Meet’s will remain Meet. Yes, there will be just two Google Meet apps: Meet (let’s call it 1.0, the Meet app to be soon phased out) and the new Meet (let’s call it “2.0,” the new Meet app that combines both Meet and Duo).

+ Social Media Recap: Aurora Calls Out Crestron in Recent Marketing Email [Steph Beckett]

According to a marketing email from Aurora Multimedia, Aurora’s VPX 1GBPS AV-over-IP solutions claim to be the “solution for Crestron NVX lead time issues.” The email also says Aurora’s solution can perform everything Crestron’s NVX does and more at a lower cost. What do you think? Is this a fair marketing tactic?
