Latest headlines: Scott Tiner on AV versus IT, Paul Konikowski writes about the cybersecurity angle to the Nashville bombing and more

March 19, 2021 | Volume: 7 | Issue: 6

Hello, end users. I’m back with a question: Is it time to finally shake hands with our IT neighbors? (Metaphorically, of course. It’s still a pandemic outside.) Scott Tiner says heck yes. You might not be a stranger to the AV and IT convergence school of thought, but Scott Tiner makes an excellent argument for why AV is IT. Check it out.

Also, Paul Konikowski is back with his latest #SecuringAV piece, this time on the Nashville bombing during Christmas 2020. I was surprised at first when Paul submitted this article (this does not seem to be about AV at first glance), but as you start to read, you’ll see how close this lies to technology and those who make the technology.

Have a great weekend. Get your vaccines. Catch you on the flip side.

COLUMNS

+ AV Is IT [Scott Tiner]

During End User Day of LAVNCH WEEK 3.0 in February (in partnership with HETMA), I enjoyed listening to end users speak about AV security. It was particularly interesting to me since I had just written a blog on how the SolarWinds hack should serve as a lesson to the AV industry. I was tweeting a few thoughts during the event. In my tweets, I wrote about how AV and IT are the same things. Many of the panelists on the talk had indicated the same thinking. Yet, some of the responses to my tweet surprised me. There are people in our (AV) industry who will still argue that AV and IT are not, indeed, the same thing.

+ SecuringAV: The Christmas Morning Bombing in Nashville [Paul Konikowski]

The explosion in Nashville, Tennessee, Dec. 25, 2020, suggests that at least some extremists separate technology from the people who make the technology happen. Early that morning, around 6:30 a.m., an RV camper full of explosives was detonated in the downtown portion of the city, causing significant damage to an AT&T telecommunications hub.
