Latest headlines: Mark Coxon on the importance of Connection Centers, Sara Abrons on the development of the blue LED, plus news from C2G

November 19, 2021 | Volume: 7 | Issue: 22

The world has changed quite a bit in the past two years. Right now, the hottest topic seems to be returning to the office. But here’s a question: Do you even need an office? Mark Coxon says maybe not! But he does say, if keeping a real estate presence is important to your company, you do need a “Connection Center.” Read to find out what that is and why it’s important!

Next up, Sara Abrons writes about the “blue LED problem.” Basically, scientists discovered LEDs in 1961 — and in the years after, developed red and green ones. But the process for developing blue ones was much more difficult! Here’s why.

Finally, the InfoComm coverage never stops! If you were unable to attend this year, or if you’re just curious, check out Gary’s list of his favorite products he saw on the show floor, complete with demo videos!

Have a great weekend!

COLUMNS

+ The Connection Center [Mark Coxon]

There’s a lot of debate about the return to the office, the hybrid work week and the potential hub and spoke layout of the future. To be honest, I’m not sure every company needs an office, but I know for certain that if you are keeping a real estate footprint at all, you should be building a Connection Center.

+ The Blue LED Problem: How a Difficult Solid State Physics Obstacle Delayed LED Technology by Decades [Sara Abrons]

From early on, scientists were excited about the possibility of LEDs. They are much more energy-efficient and long-lasting and emit significantly less heat than previous lighting technology. Twenty to thirty percent of all electrical energy consumed is used for lighting, so efficiency improvements are significant, both economically and environmentally. Since the blue LED problem was solved, the quality, brightness, efficiency of LEDs have increased dramatically, while the size of the chips and production costs have fallen.
