Ancient AV Aliens
By Joel Rollins
rAVe Columnist I'm back from ISE in Amsterdam, and after a blizzard upon my return, I am finally having time to reflect on the experience at ISE. Because, you see, I made an amazing discovery at the show: I Am Not Alone.
Let me explain by beginning with a confession. I have a vice, one that civilized, educated people rarely admit. At the show, I made the startling discovery that there are others like me in the industry, and it has given me the courage to admit my problem. Although I pulled the plug on broadcast television two years ago, seeking to watch only educational programming, I have a shameful addiction.
I watch "Ancient Aliens" on the History Channel.
For those of you who haven't seen the show (or those who just won't admit it) the premise is simple: Everything unexplained in the history of this planet MAY HAVE been the result of alien interference in human culture. And I do mean ANYTHING unexplained… the dinosaur extinction, the mysteries of the pyramids, the Facebook IPO — all are the result of extraterrestrial influences. The show is populated with a series of educators, writers and publishers who share one characteristic: They are "Ancient Astronaut Theorists" (read: UFO Nuts). Chief among them, or at least most typical of them, is Giorgio Tsoukalos, publisher of "Legendary Times" Magazine.
Giorgio is memorable for two reasons — first, his watery-eyed, manic enthusiasm for all "theories" that involve the idea that aliens have been in touch with humans all throughout history, that the government is covering up that fact, and that Carrot Top is their current leader. Second is his hair, which is the stuff of which Internet legends are made.
Nobody has yet offered a really plausible reason for Giorgio's high-voltage coiffure, but I think I have one, after four years of study. I think the style was established the first time he saw a TV camera, and quickly ripped off the crumpled tinfoil with which he usually shields himself from alien mind control rays. But that's just my theory. Human Beings must reach deep inside themselves, and decide what they believe.
OK, so that's my confession. But this bad habit may have actually helped me realize the answers to some of the mysteries I have puzzled over for a long, long time.
You see, I have become an "Ancient AV Aliens Theorist." I think many of the anomalies in the "AV Universe" may be explained by alien interference in our technological culture.
Minds open now, humans. Just consider:
HDCP:
Remember when matching a display to a source just took matching up a signal format and resolution? Now, it seems like we must also talk them into getting along socially. We now need to compare software versions, historical production dates and material requirements. Making the system work now feels like supervising a play date between cranky toddlers.
Which brings me to my theory:
Isn't it just possible that HDCP was planted in our equipment by aliens, in order to limit our communications capability during their invasion of our planet?
(Author's note: In keeping with the format of the TV show, I will draw no conclusions — just ask vague questions. This not only leaves it up to you, the intelligent reader, to decide what you believe, it also really cuts down on this author's research time.)
3D:
Let me ask you this: Have you not found yourself, at times, wearing 3D eyewear and wondering why? I know I have, at virtually every demonstration. This insidious compulsion has caused me to consider a number of possibilities.
Let's face it — there really isn't that much to be excited about with the current crop of 3D televisions. So could it have another, more sinister purpose? Could all the hype be about getting us to put on alien hypnotic eyewear? Personally, I "theorize" that it is for one of two purposes:
First, it could be to mess with our vision and depth perception, giving us headaches and rendering us unable to fight back effectively when the Overlords from Orion invade.
Or, 3D could just be an alien attempt to drive us into a sense of futility and despair.
Either way, the plot is well underway, and seems to be succeeding on both fronts.
Twitter:
This one is just so obvious that I can see Giorgio frantically replacing the tinfoil.
COME ON, humans — we are being prepared to accept cryptic communication, whose source we are often unsure of, and to react to it as if our membership in society depends on it — which it may, if my "theory" is correct. What is a Flash Mob if not a demonstration of our willingness to become an unthinking part of a hive entity?
Remember, what is their goal? That we become "Followers," right? Case closed. Bear in mind, TMTYL = "Take me to your leader."
Pico Projectors:
I sensed the alien influence the first time one of my favorite reps reached into his briefcase and handed me one. I contemplated it for quite a while before I looked up and in a hushed whisper asked, "But… but why?"
Answer: Aliens are tiny, have huge eyes that are sensitive to extremely dim, small pictures, and want us to have projectors ready for them when they get here.
I could go on, and mention other signs of extraterrestrial malevolence, (like the Windows 8 interface), but let's just leave it at this: From now on, whenever one of my manufacturers hands me a piece of technology for which there is no obvious reason, I'll know what's up. And there will only be one way to react.
Pass the tinfoil, Giorgio.

Christie Introduces Phoenix, Control for Control Rooms Christie wants to re-define content management for the control room with the Christie Phoenix, an open content management system designed specifically for fast-paced command and control centers with highly mobile and dispersed work forces (such as public utilities, government, security and surveillance, transportation and telecommunications).
A network streaming solution at its core, Christie Phoenix allows users to seamlessly access and control information, in virtually any location, for collaboration, synthesizing of information and decision-making in critical environments.
Based on a single streaming appliance, the Christie Phoenix node, and a PC user software environment, Christie Phoenix systems are designed to be simple and cost effective to configure, deploy and manage, simultaneously, all from one box.
Christie Phoenix nodes can be combined to create synchronized display walls of virtually any size, or can be used as a desktop processor to augment a single user’s operating environment. PC software offers access and control of Christie Phoenix streams anywhere a user can connect to a network. As a network streaming device, Christie Phoenix nodes are compatible with the majority of existing network cameras and surveillance systems, as well as a number of third-party video encoders.
The Christie Phoenix node is a 19” rack mount unit that comes standard with DVI, KVM and audio input and output connectors (which can all be used simultaneously). A Christie Phoenix node can encode up to two and decode up to 12 high definition signals. Multiple Christie Phoenix nodes can be combined and synchronized to create a display wall of up to 128 outputs.
Inputs, each up to 1920×1080 resolution, are encoded and placed on the network – while simultaneously allowing keyboard and mouse (KVM) control of those inputs over the network. Where access to output connectors is not possible, Christie Phoenix offers software-only VNC and RDP implementations for direct access to encode, stream, control and display content.
The desktop software included with Christie Phoenix features a drag-and-drop interface that can manage content on multiple display walls simultaneously. It can also display Christie Phoenix content locally on a user’s desktop while sharing content with other Christie Phoenix users across the network, all of whom can view and control the content.

Share Article Back to Top L-ACOUSTICS Introduces Loudspeaker Modules for CATT, EASE, ODEON and LARA L-ACOUSTICS has announced that new modules are now available for third party software, including CATT-Acoustics (Dynamic Link Library – DLL), EASE (Generic Loudspeaker Library – GLL), ODEON and LARA.
Sound designers and acousticians can now simulate L-ACOUSTICS' line source arrays via specific GLL or DLL files for the electro-acoustic software EASE and CATT-Acoustics, respectively. L-ACOUSTICS coaxial speakers can also be simulated using the dedicated GLL file in EASE and the Common Loudspeaker Format (CLF) file for CATT-Acoustics, ODEON and LARA.
Each third party software can be used in parallel with SOUNDVISION to simulate additional parameters, such as total sound pressure level (taking into account the reverberation field), intelligibility and clarity factor thanks to the fact that they include room acoustics properties.

Share Article Back to Top New InFocus Projectors Designed for Large Venues InFocus' new DLP projector is the IN5550, which is aimed at larger venues. Specified at 8,300 lumens, this is the brightest projector InFocus has ever offered. The company isn't really known as an install projector provider — in fact, InFocus is known to have bought and destroyed an install-brand: Proxima.
The IN5550 offers two lamps, motorized lens shift and 360-degree projection and image blending, which lets users project separate images from multiple projectors, creating one stunning seamless image. The projectors also come with two easily replaceable color wheels. The “Presentation” color wheel delivers rich colors with high brightness and the “Cinema Correct” color wheel provides precise RGB and CMYK color control.
Inputs includes VGA, 3G-SDI, HDMI 1.4, DVI-D, five BNC (RGBHV, YpbPr), as well as RS232 and Ethernet control. It also offers a wired remote, which allows users to run a small cable up to 100 feet and plug directly into the remote control that ships with the unit. The IN5550 Series offers six interchangeable lenses ranging from short throw to ultra-long throw. These bayonet-style lenses can be switched with the touch of a button and adjusted with motorized lens shift to precisely position your image. When the preferred position is achieved, it can be saved in one of 10 memory locations.
The IN5550 Series comes in three models: the IN5552L, IN5554L and IN5555L, which feature native resolutions of XGA, WXGA and WUXGA, respectively. Here are all the specs: http://www.infocus.com/projectors/large-venue-projectors/infocus-in5550-projector-series

Share Article Back to Top For all you REGULAR readers of rAVe Rental [and Staging] Edition out there, hopefully you enjoyed another opinion-packed issue! For those of you NEW to rAVe, you just read how we are — we are 100 percent opinionated. We not only report the news and new product stories of the ProAV industry, but we stuff the articles full of our opinions. That may include (but is not limited to) whether or not the product is even worth looking at, challenging the manufacturers on their specifications, calling a marketing-spec bluff and suggesting ways integrators market their products better. But, one thing is for sure, we are NOT a trade publication that gets paid for running editorial or product stories. Traditional trade publications get paid to run product stories — that's why you see what you see in most of the pubs out there. We are different: we run what we want to run and NO ONE is going to pay us to write anything good (or bad). Don't like us, then go away — unsubscribe! Just use the link below. To send me feedback, don't reply to this newsletter. Instead, write directly to me at gary@ravepubs.com or for editorial ideas, Editor-in-Chief Sara Abrons at sara@ravepubs.com A little about me: I graduated from Journalism School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I am adjunct faculty). I've been in the AV-industry since 1987 where I started with Extron and eventually moved to AMX. So, I guess I am an industry veteran (although I don't think I am that old). I have been an opinionated columnist for a number of industry publications and in the late 1990s I started the widely read KNews eNewsletter (the first in the AV market) and also created the model for and was co-founder of AV Avenue, which is now known as InfoComm IQ. rAVe [Publications] has been around since 2003, when we launched our original newsletter, rAVe ProAV Edition. Everything we publish is Opt-in — we spam NO ONE! rAVe ProAV Edition is our flagship ePublication with what we believe is a reach of virtually everyone in the ProAV market. rAVe HomeAV Edition, co-published with CEDIA and launched in February 2004, is, by far, the largest ePub in the HomeAV market. We added rAVe Rental [and Staging] in November 2007, rAVe ED [Education] in May 2008 and then rAVe DS [Digital Signage] in January 2009. We added rAVe GHGav [Green, Healthcare & Government AV] in August 2010 and rAVe HOW [House of Worship] in July 2012.
