Latest headlines: Gary Kayye on “POT” calls, Bob Snyder on a presentation company called Pitch, plus news from Extron, Biamp and more

June 25, 2021 | Volume: 7 | Issue: 12

How’s it going, #AVtweeps? I hope you’re all having a great June!

This time, Gary Kayye wants to talk to you about “plain old telephone” calls in his latest column. Do you ever miss calling people on the phone instead of having to sit still in your chair while you have Zoom call after Zoom call after Zoom call? I do! I’m tired of doing my makeup every day so I don’t look like a zombie. I miss wearing my ridiculous Guy Fieri T-shirt without clients having to see it. I miss being able to take calls from the car. I sometimes feel so glued to my chair that I’ll give just about anything to go back to the before times. But we can’t.

On a completely different note, Bob Snyder writes about a company that focuses on presentation software (move over PowerPoint and Google Slides!). I normally hate how presentations look — don’t even get me started on how ugly Prezis are — but Pitch might be doing something right. Check out Bob’s story for more info.

Finally, we are full of news! Check out the latest from Epson, Blustream, Barco, KRK, PPDS, Biamp, iRoom and more.

Also, if projection mapping is your cup of tea, you’re going to want to scroll down and check out the Pixel Artworks/WrightTech Media story. It is unbelievably cool. Anyone down for a trip to Gibraltar?

Enjoy!

COLUMNS

+ I Miss ‘POT’ Calls [Gary Kayye]

All of a sudden, post-COVID, I find myself yearning for a simple, uncomplicated, spur-of-the-moment phone call. One where I can’t see anyone, just for a while. And, truth be told, I kind of don’t want them to see me. I liked wearing my semi-controversial T-shirts to spark discussions around the office. My once-coveted Star Wars collection is becoming hackneyed to everyone on Zoom.

+ Pitch Perfect in Berlin [Bob Snyder]

As much as people gripe about PowerPoint, no one has been able to jiggle that rock, let alone seriously dislodge that mainstay of Microsoft’s bluestone wall of business productivity software. “Death by PowerPoint” became a familiar phrase in global culture and defenders only sound like America’s NRA when they argue “It’s not the tool; it’s the user!” Pitch launched its vision in October 2020.
