Latest headlines: Mark Coxon on collaboration products and the apps that (often) come with them, plus news from Visionary, Roland and more

October 20, 2020 | Volume: 6 | Issue: 20

Hello, end users! I hope your week is going well and that you are all hitting the ground running. (Metaphorically, that is. Unless you like running. In that case, good for you. That makes one of us.)

In this newsletter edition, I have some good stuff for you! First of all, take a gander at Mark Coxon’s blog about collaboration devices and the apps that come with them. Whether you are vehemently anti-app or whether you love it and think it makes a collaboration solution worth using, Mark talks about both sides. Next up, a feature from Bob Snyder. Bob writes about a company called Nvidia and its offerings that weave together the physical and digital worlds. Finally, Scott Tiner wrote a wrapup about all the trade show news we received in September. Disclaimer: It was a lot. But he walks us through and offers his thoughts on what’s next for trade shows and networking in the AV industry.

Once you’re done checking out the blogs, I hope you’ll enjoy reading all the product news we’ve accumulated for you. The latest updates include a multiviewer solution from Visionary, DTEN’s new product announcements at Zoomtopia, BenQ’s new interactive flat panels, Extron’s ENERGY STAR qualified subwoofer amplifier and more.

Oh, and one more thing: Check out the latest study on the future of professional speakers from Futuresource Consulting and a few new additions to DPAA.

Get your reading on!

— Steph Beckett

+ App-less Shrugged [Mark Coxon]

Currently, collaboration devices offer a variety of additional features. Those features include wireless screen-sharing, wireless USB connection of room peripherals back to the devices in the room, the ability to do virtual rooms, the option to connect multiple displays together in extended desktops or in broadcast style modes, Outlook/calendar integration, the ability to act as a host to cross-platform soft-conferencing applications, far-end sharing of collaboration canvases and tools, far-end screen share and a single sign-on meeting credential to launch calendared events. Now of course, not all of these features are available on all of the devices out there, and you’ll likely need to explore each one and decide which device is appropriate based on the use case and the pros and cons. However, there is one commonality between this new generation of devices and that is they all have their own apps.

+ When are We Going to Start to Pay More Attention to Nvidia? Probably Now. [Bob Snyder]

This month, Nvidia announces an open beta for Omniverse, a 3D simulation and collaboration platform — and Maxine, a cloud-native streaming video AI platform. It’s now a phygital world — and as the physical and digital worlds fuse to simulate reality in real time and with pixel perfect detail, the company that AV should pay more attention to is Nvidia.

+ September: An Interesting Month for Trade Shows [Scott Tiner]

In case you were not paying attention during the month of September, a few news stories broke regarding industry trade shows. This blog is my reaction to this information and my thoughts about what the next year will bring in terms of trade shows. Before I go any further, I want to be clear that I would love nothing more than to ship off to Orlando in June to attend InfoComm and see old friends. I would love nothing more than to see the live events industry come roaring back and give all our colleagues who have suffered so drastically during the past several months a chance to get back on their feet. Yet, I also believe that the responsible thing to do for us and our industry is to take a reasonable, logical approach to what is coming.
