It’s been awhile, my fellow #AVtweeps. You’ve mostly been reading introductions from rAVe assistant editor Steph Beckett, who has been holding down much of the editorial fort while I run around planning virtual conferences. She’s funny, yes? And you must love her Disney references. I asked her if she was going to run out soon and she says never, so. Better keep on keepin’ on, Disney. Speaking of industry conferences, you can go ahead and feel free to sign on up for LAVNCH 2.0 later this month, please and thank you. It’s free, will earn you lots of CTS RUs and has lots of cool stuff to see.

Today’s issue has a column from one of my favorite industry people, Anthony Coppedge, who talks about design thinking, or human-centered design, as well as a piece from another great writer, Scott Tiner, a must-read if you’re a tech manager at a university about what the fall classrooms will be like.

Finally, we’ve opened up nominations for our ninth-annual readers’ choice awards — and hey, if you’re reading this, you’re a rAVe reader, so you qualify to nominate! The nominations close soon on JUNE 10th, so nominate here or check out the story below for all the details.

COLUMNS

+ Design Thinking — The New Normal for AV [Anthony Coppedge]

As of this article’s writing for rAVe, one of the most recent common phrases in the English-speaking lexicon has to be new normal during the COVID-19 pandemic. The term is a hopeful euphemism to cope with the rate and volume of change in short order so that humans can find ways to accept and normalize this particular period in history. The AV industry should see this pandemic shift in business not as a storm to be weathered but a new normal to embrace. To help innovate and lead differently in a new normal, the principles of design thinking focus on how to thrive moving forward as AV manufacturers, systems integrators, consultants or AV dealers

+ The Fall 2020 Classroom [Scott Tiner]

It’s June of 2020, and colleges and universities have finished their crazy spring semesters. Most are pivoting, rooted in planning for the fall semester of 2020. A few themes seem to be emerging that will begin to shape what this next school year looks like, and therefore how the AV market will play a role. The high-level overview is this: Most residential colleges and universities feel a significant push to get students to return to campus. So, with all this in mind, I believe that the majority of colleges have already, or will by the end of June announce that they are opening. I guess in my July blog, I’ll have a better idea of whether that prediction is accurate.
